Sarah - 3rd Grade - Self Assessment of Pedagogy

Self-Assessment of Pedagogy (E-2.5)
DIRECTIONS: With your support provider, discuss the standard below, referencing any information
discovered when reviewing the Conversation Guide – Pedagogy (E-3.5).
Pedagogy (IPS 5)
Participating teachers grow and improve in their ability to reflect upon and apply the California Standards
for the Teaching Profession and the specific pedagogical skills for subject matter instruction beyond what
was demonstrated for the preliminary credential. They utilize the adopted academic content standards
and performance levels for students, curriculum frameworks, and instructional materials in the context of
their teaching assignment.
Participating teachers use and interpret student assessment data from multiple measures for entry level,
progress monitoring, and summative assessments of student academic performance to inform instruction.
They plan and differentiate instruction using multi-tiered interventions as appropriate based on the
assessed individual, academic language and literacy, and diverse learning needs of the full range of
learners (e.g. struggling readers, students with special needs, English learners, speakers of non-standard
English, and advanced learners).
To maximize learning, participating teachers create and maintain well-managed classrooms that foster
students’ physical, cognitive, emotional and social well-being. They develop safe, inclusive, and healthy
learning environments that promote respect, value differences, and mediate conflicts according to state
laws and local protocol.
Participating teaches are fluent, critical users of technological resources and use available technology to
assess, plan, and deliver instruction so all students can learn. Participating teachers enable students to
use technology to advance their learning. Local district technology policies are followed by participating
teachers when implementing strategies to maximize student learning and awareness around privacy,
security, and safety.
DIRECTIONS: Self-assessment completed for the CSTP elements provide support information for Induction
Program Standard reflection. Read and review evidence collected (Context for Teaching and Learning, observations,
student work) and describe how you are applying this standard to your classroom today.
Reflection Planning Prompts:

Learning Environment
How do I create a well-managed, safe and healthy learning
environment?

Assessment
How do I use multiple measures to monitor toward meeting the state
adopted academic content standards?

Technology
How do I use technology to assess, plan, and deliver instruction?

Strengths
In my classroom I make sure to plan and implement each lesson using the California State Content Standards for all
curricular areas. Through these lessons, I use multiple forms of assessment. I make sure to do informal, formal,
formative and summative assessments. Using these different types of assessment allow me to gauge the students
needs and challenges and re-work lessons and instruction when necessary. Through the differentiating of instruction,
I pull small groups to work with them one on one to focus on their individual challenge areas. Both within my
classroom and school wide, I use our STAR system to reward the positive behavior shown by students being Safe,
Team players, Achievers, and Responsible and Respectful. Reinforcing this system both with my class inside and
outside of the classroom has proved to be a great way to reward students for positive behaviors.

Challenges
We have a large Vietnamese population of students at our school and we celebrate the TET Festival. I have had to
learn about the Vietnamese culture in order to be able to relate to the needs of my students. I also have several other
cultures represented in my classroom; therefore, I need to make sure that I celebrate the differences and similarities
of all cultures, rather than just focusing in on one particular culture. In the area of technology, I was fortunate
enough to have a SmartBoard in my classroom with a projector and a laptop computer. Unfortunately, our school
was broken into and vandalized, my projector was smashed, leaving it not functioning. I have had to alter the way I
teach everything! This has proved to be a challenge and caused me to be creative in the way that I think and present
lessons.
Application in the classroom
In my classroom I make sure to use all of the California Content Standards, including the English Language
Development Standards, to cover the wide array of learners present in my classroom. I also make sure to use not just
the adopted textbooks for instruction, but I use the supplemental resources provided by the textbook companies in
order to differentiate for the learning styles and abilities in my class. The TET Assembly will be held on Friday,
January 23, 2009. At this assembly the children will learn all about TET, why it is celebrated, and the customs and
traditions that come along with this celebration. In class the students will write about a dragon who is part of the
celebration and what he or she sees and does during the TET celebration. This writing assignment gets the students
prepared for the SCOE test, while meeting the third grade writing standards (example of two of the third grade
writing standards: 1.1 Organization and Focus – Create a single paragraph, develop a topic sentence, include
supporting facts and details; 2.1 Write narratives – provide context within which an action takes place.)
