Unit 8- Measurement 4th Grade Day 12 Elapsed Time Notes/Practice Notes: Bar and Loop Method Patrick went to the pool from 10:40 A.M. until 2:45 P.M. How many hours and minutes was Patrick at the pool? Step 1: Draw a timeline with the beginning time labeled. 10:40 Start – A.M. Step 2: Count by hours until you have no hours left to count. 10:40 11:40 1 hour 12:40 2 hours Start – A.M. 1:40 3 hours 2:40 4 hours P.M. Begins Step 3: Count by 5-minute increments using loops on your timeline until you have no minutes left to count. 10:40 1 hour Start – A.M. 11:40 12:40 2 hours 1:40 3 hours 2:40 2:45 4 hours +5 min P.M. Begins End – P.M. Step 4: Add the hours and minutes together to get the elapsed time of 4 hours and 5 minutes. Practice: (1) Find the elapsed time from 5:25 P.M. to 10:40 P.M. (2) Find the elapsed time from 11:25 P.M. to 4:35 A.M. 1 Unit 8- Measurement 4th Grade Day 12 Elapsed Time Notes/Practice Notes: Time Table Method Patrick went to the pool from 10:40 A.M. until 2:45 P.M. How many hours and minutes was Patrick at the pool? Step 1: Use a table like the one below to organize the times. Make sure you label “A.M.” and “P.M.” as necessary. Start End Hours Minutes Step 2: Begin with the “Hours” column and add as many hours as you think necessary to get to the “End” time. In the example, you started with 1 hour and then added that hour to the start time in the “Start” column. An “X” was placed in the “Minutes” column to show that no minutes had been added. Start 10:40 A.M. End 11:40 A.M. Hours +1 Minutes X Step 3: Continue adding hours until no more hours can be added. Notice that when you cross the “12:00” mark, the A.M. changes to P.M. Start End Hours Minutes 10:40 A.M. 11:40 A.M. +1 X 11:40 A.M. 12:40 P.M. +1 X 12:40 P.M. 2:40 P.M. +2 X 2:40 P.M. 2:45 P.M. Step 4: Since no more hours can be added without going past the end time, minutes must be added. Add as many minutes as you think need to be until you get to the end time. Start End Hours Minutes 10:40 A.M. 11:40 A.M. +1 X 11:40 A.M. 12:40 P.M. +1 X 12:40 P.M. 2:40 P.M. +2 X 2:40 P.M. 2:45 P.M. X +5 2 Unit 8- Measurement 4th Grade Day 12 Elapsed Time Notes/Practice Step 5: Add the amounts in the “Hours” column and then the amounts in the “Minutes” column. This total is the elapsed time. Start End Minutes 10:40 A.M. 11:40 A.M. +1 X 11:40 A.M. 12:40 P.M. +1 X 12:40 P.M. 2:40 P.M. +2 X 2:40 P.M. 2:45 P.M.
