Educational Theory and Practice
If you are interested in being a part of your community as a teacher, teacher leader, or researcher,
study with the Department of Educational Theory and Practice. We are home to initial
certification programs at the bachelor's and master's levels in:



Early childhood education
Middle grades education
Secondary social studies education
We also provide continuing education for these areas through master of education and
educational specialist degrees, as well as a doctoral program in educational theory and practice.
Faculty and students work with projects that integrate research, teaching, and service through
community engagement. Local projects include:





Professional Development School partnership with the Clarke County School District
Science education professional development projects with surrounding school districts
Social studies education partnership with the Cobb House museum
Collaboration with homeschooling families
Neighborhood-based education center emphasizing creativity and critical literacies
Our faculty are highly productive, award-winning researchers and teachers. Our grant-funded
projects expand knowledge around issues in teaching, learning, and learning to teach in varied
contexts. Our faculty regularly publish in top-tier peer-reviewed journals and newspapers, and
present at workshops.

o BSEd in Early Childhood Education Athens Campus
Prepare for a career teaching prekindergarten through grade five with our BSEd in
Early Childhood Education.

BSEd in Middle Grades Education (Grades 4-8) Athens Campus
Our program is a national leader in middle school reform and leads to certification
in two subject areas.
o
BSEd in Social Studies Education Athens Campus
Gain the knowledge and skills to teach secondary students about the complex,
culturally rich world of the 21st century.


o MEd in Early Childhood Education Athens Campus
Earn your MEd in Early Childhood Education through the University of Georgia's
nationally recognized program.

MEd in Middle Grades Education Athens Campus and Online
This program for practicing educators focuses on the study of young adolescents
and middle grades education (grades 4-8).
o
MEd in Middle Grades Education (online) Online
This online program for practicing educators focuses on the study of young
adolescents and middle grades education (grades 4-8).

MEd in Social Studies Education Athens Campus and Online
The MEd in Social Studies Education is for practicing teachers who are interested
in getting deeper knowledge of the theories and practices embedded within social
studies.
o
MEd in Social Studies Education (online) Online
The online MEd in Social Studies Education is for practicing teachers who are
interested in getting deeper knowledge of the theories and practices embedded
within social studies.

Master of Arts in Teaching
o MAT in Early Childhood Education Athens Campus
Learn to work with children, families, and communities. Gain certification for
grades prekindergarten through fifth with our MAT in Early Childhood Education
program.
o
MAT in Middle Grades Education (Grades 4-8) Athens Campus
This program is a leader in the field of middle school reform and is one of the
oldest middle school-specific MAT programs in the nation. Program completion
results in both a master's degree and in Georgia teacher certification in grades 4-8
in two subject areas.
o
MAT in Social Studies Education Athens Campus
The social studies education program invites those future teachers who are
interested in making a positive difference in the world. Social studies education
cultivates the ways in which students conceive of their own place in history,
position in the economy, impact in civic spaces, and their notions of belonging.




If you are a professional speech-language pathologist with a master's degree, the
