Materials: Power Point Presentation Naviance Orientation for Learning Style Inventory – power point Learning Style Theory - power point Access to Naviance Program for log entries and Learning Style Inventory Learning Styles videos – available web addresses are listed Learning Focused Schools Format Unit Essential Question: What are learning styles? Lesson Essential Question How can knowledge of my learning style help me to become a better student? Activating Strategy Learning Style power point Teaching Strategies Power Point presentation Learning Style Assessment Extending/Refining Strategy Students will complete a journal log entry reacting to the results of their completed Learning Style Inventory. Journal Entry Questions: Describe three things that you learned about yourself from completing the Learning Style Inventory. 8 lines – 5 minutes (Collins Type 1) What impact did completing the activity have on you thoughts about your study habits and strategies. 5 minutes (Collins Type 2) Agenda Direct Instruction – (15 minutes-Half Class) Learning Styles Inventory presentation and Naviance Orientation 1. The instructor will introduce the theme of Learning Styles. Using the Learning Styles power point the instructor will lead the students to the idea that personal knowledge of learning styles can increase their ability to study and prepare more efficiently and effectively. Individual Online Instruction – (15 minutes-Half Class) 1. Each student will choose 4 of the 9 videos listed below to view. All students must watch the first video – Introduction to Styles and Preferences. Once you are logged in locate the “About Me” tab and select the Learning Style Inventory and complete the survey. Journal Entry Find and select the tab all “About Me” Next find the “Journal” link Once you have found the link and selected it add a new journal entry and in the subject line title it as Career Cluster Reaction Select – Share and share this entry with your counselors, teachers, and parents. Journal Entry Directions: Describe three things that you learned about yourself from completing the Learning Style Inventory. 8 lines – 5 minutes (Collins Type 1) What impact did completing the activity have on you thoughts about your study habits and strategies? 5 minutes (Collins Type 2) Collaborative Activities - Option A – 10 min Snowball Activity – 1 Instruct the students to fold a piece of paper into four squares. 2. Begin with the upper right hand square. Direct the students to write their name and one thing they learned today about learning preferences in the upper right hand square. 3. Direct the students to crumble the paper and throw it to someone else in the room. Repeat step 2 using the next square clockwise. Time Permitting – Option B Collaborative Activities – (entire class divide into groups of 4-5) 10 min 1. Within in your groupOne person will volunteer or be selected by the instructor to take notes for the group. One person will volunteer or be selected by the instructor to lead the discussion. a. Discuss three things you discovered about Learning Styles. b. In your group, discuss how learning styles can affect a person in their career field. c. Discuss three techniques you learned that will help you in your efforts to be a better student
