News Release No. 19/13 SHELL LiveWIRE MoneyPoLITE Business Strategy Game Promotes Spirit of Enterprise among Youth ITE, in collaboration with Shell LiveWIRE, will be hosting the annual MoneyPoLITE Challenge on Fri 19 July 2013 at ITE College West. This is an engaging platform where students can experience hands-on learning of revenue-cost-profit relationships and the factors that drive profitability. It also enhances the students’ understanding of the strategies needed for competing successfully in a competitive business environment. 37 teams from secondary schools will showcase their entrepreneurial skills and knowledge while vying for the top award. MoneyPoLITE is an interactive business game that aims to promote the spirit of enterprise in young people so that they can learn in a fun and experiential way. It was developed seven years ago by Mr George Balongay, a Lecturer at ITE College West’s School of Business & Services. Each game component simulates the real business environment. Participants are required to analyse the impact each of their business decisions has on the profitability of the business. The game can be configured to cater to the participants’ differing abilities. Secondary school students, ITE students and adult learners have all benefited from the challenge. It is also able to create new scenarios to reflect the current economic situations in the world. About Shell LiveWire Shell LiveWIRE is an international programme for young people seeking to start their own enterprise. It aims to encourage and give young people access to resources and advice on starting a business as a career option, provide a mentoring programme for young entrepreneurs in the early stages of their business start-up and assist young entrepreneurs to develop the necessary skills to manage a new business. The programme was launched in Singapore in 2000 in partnership with the Institute of Technical Studies (ITE), the ITE Alumni Association, the Chinese Newspaper Division of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Shell Companies in Singapore. Factsheet on MoneyPoLITE Business Strategy Game The MoneyPoLITE Business Strategy Game is an in-house developed interactive gaming platform to promote enterprise education. This creates authentic learning to the gamers and engages them as virtual entrepreneurs. Gamers would learn the various aspects of setting up a business and the importance of making valuable decisions under different economic situations. They would also develop business strategies to grow their virtual businesses. At the end of the game session, gamers would understand the revenue-cost-profit relationships and factors that drive profitability. The MoneyPoLITE Business Strategy Game uses gaming as the pedagogy to educate the youth in entrepreneurship. The development of each game component is focused on simulating the real business environment and the impact of each of the business decision that is being made to the profitability of the business. The innovative feature of this development is its capability to be configured to cater to various levels of participants. There are also options to create new scenarios to reflect the current global economic situations and relevant knowledge-based questions. The MoneyPoLITE Business Strategy Game is an on-line game. It is done in PHP and MySQL. These components have to be configured in a web server. Web browser (preferably Internet Explorer) and multimedia software (i.e. Flash player) have to be installed in the participant’s computer.
