Professional Development Plan Instructions

IoE PI2 Individual Professional Development Plan Instructions
Mentee faculty members and postdoctoral research associates are expected to use
the Individual Professional Development Plan to identify professional development
goals and to plan strategies for achieving these goals. These plans will also provide a
foundation for the mentoring activities of the mentor/mentee pair.
Mentees will develop a draft of this plan to discuss and finalize during the first
formal mentoring session (prior to November 29, 2013) with his/her designated
mentor. The final draft of the Individual Professional Development Plan should be
attached to the IoE PI2 Mentee Documentation Form and submitted to the
appropriate IoE Co-Director to facilitate the IoE PI2 mentoring program.
IoE PI2 Individual Professional Development Plan
Each mentee should take some time to reflect on professional needs before
preparing the draft plan to discuss with the mentor.
PI2 Program Goal Areas, specific goals of the IoE PI2 Program, are provided in the
Individual Professional Development Plan template to foster consideration of
possible needs and resources. The Key Outcomes for Success statements are
suggestive of what each mentee needs to be successful in the Goal Area. These are
not meant to be all-inclusive and mentees can add other priorities that are not
already included but are important in his/her individual plan.
Mentees are encouraged to identify individual Professional Development
Goals/Plans in each applicable area. An example has been provided for each Goal
Area. The key when outlining these goals/plans is to be specific about how much of
what is important. When taken together with the Timeframe and the initial mentor
meeting to finalize the plan, these should be specific, measurable, agreed-upon,
realistic, and time-based. If there is a Key Deliverable that will indicate completion
or achievement of the goal, that should be included in the last column.
Each applicable PI2 Program Goal Area should have several specific, outcomefocused goals and expectations, as well as plans/strategies for achieving those goals
within a given timeframe. Both short- (within six months) and long-term (up to
three years) goals should be considered.
Updates to the Individual Professional Development Plan should take place at least
once every semester, at the minimum. With each update, an IoE PI2 Mentee
Documentation Form should be submitted with the updated plan.
