Highlights from the January release
The following release notes are for clients installing Brightspace Capture 9.0 (January 2016).
Brightspace Capture 9.0 has several new features and changes. In this document, you will find the necessary details to
understand the feature changes, why they were made, and how they impact Brightspace Capture.
You can use this document in support of communicating the changes to your organization. We welcome your feedback and
questions about this release in the Brightspace Community.

Brightspace Capture 9.0 is a brand new, redesigned version of the software components of Brightspace Capture. The new
version supports modern media formats, improves support for mobile device use, and reduces some redundant features to
create increased usability and reliability. The following are some key updates to Brightspace Capture 9.0:
Media playback

Adobe Flash® Player has been replaced with HTML5 for easy viewing from all mobile devices and via all major
browsers for both live and on demand presentations. Legacy presentations are still offered in a legacy Flash
player.

An adaptive bit-rate is available for on-demand presentations in Capture 9.0.

All media sources are played as a single stream, eliminating sync issues from the player or network connection.

High definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) quality options are now available for on-demand viewing.

On-demand presentations are now available for progressive download for all users. Live presentations are
streamed via HTTP Live Streaming.

Closed captions play in all browsers that support HTML5 overlay.
Simplified Encoding

All Audio/Video sources are now mixed into one file and then encoded.

Sources include Audio/Video devices and local screen capture. Document uploads are no longer supported, but
are encoded as video using the screen capture function.

Encoding can be paused in real time.

Only one audio source is required to sync secondary Audio/Video presentation.
Web Capture

Video Note is now included with Capture Portal for easy recording of short web cam videos in the browser.

Brightspace Capture Encoder for Mac OS or Windows OS replaces the previously supported functionality of
Adobe Flash which enabled uploading documents, web cam capturing, and streaming and recoding
presentations within web browsers. The Brightspace Capture Encoder offers similar functionality.
Post production

The Brightspace Capture portal tool Producer has been rebuilt as an HTML 5 tool that allows video trimming,
and table of contents and closed captioning editing.

Legacy presentations must first be transcoded into single HD video files using the Transcoding tool in the
<tool_capture> Portal. All changes to slides must be completed prior to upgrading to version 9.0.

Third party editing tools can now be used to edit, because all source files are now merged into a single video
file.
Capture Portal and LMS Integration Points

Capture 9.0 has been updated with a modern design that is simple to navigate, and responsive to multiple
device types.

D2L Learning Environment and LTI links no longer require Adobe Flash. All legacy embeds will continue to work
using the new HTML 5 player.
Capture Station Hardware

CS500 hardware is fully supported by version 9.0 and recommended for use.

Capture Portal 9.0 has been tested with CS400 hardware and works only with SD encoding due to hardware
limitations.
Capture 9.0 implements PIE items D1776 and D2831.

Technical Details
Due to the switch away from Flash, the Web
Capture functionality is no longer available in
its previous form. Similar functionality can be
achieved with Capture Encoder. In addition,
Video Note now comes with Capture Portal to
provide simple webcam recording and
publishing options.
CS300 and CS400 Capture station hardware are
no longer sold.
Capture 9.0 has been tested and works with SD
encoding only on CS400. Epiphan hardware
must be set to a fixed 10 Frames Per Second
(FPS).
Upgrade to CS500 is recommended.
Capture 9.0 does not support Windows XP OS.
Capture 9.0 has been tested with Windows 7
and works only with SD encoding settings on
this OS.
Capture Producer is now an HTML5 tool that
allows video trimming, and Table of Contents
and Closed Captions editing only. It is no
longer possible to add, delete, move, or
replace screen videos or presentation slides,
because camera and screen frames are now
combined into single files.
Legacy presentations must be transcoded into
single HD video files prior to upgrade to
Capture 9.0.

The user no longer has the viewing options for
side-by-side, camera-only, screen-only or
picture-in-picture. Users can zoom in on the
camera and/or screen only if the browser
supports it.
