Catholic Mass option WHISTLER CANTANDO FESTIVAL is a 3-Day Non-Competitive Festival designed for North American music programs to enhance their skills and meet other musicians. The Festival is held in Whistler, BC, a 125 km drive north of Vancouver and home site of the 2010 Winter Olympics. The pedestrian-friendly Village lends itself perfectly to a safe festival atmosphere for all participants. All restaurants, hotels, and festival venues are within an easy 10-minute walk. CANTANDO FESTIVAL GUIDING PRINCIPLES: - - - - Promoting REPERTOIRES OF THE HIGHEST ARTISTIC QUALITY, both in the selections expected for performances, as well as music performed by guest ensembles. Utilizing THE BEST AVAILABLE TEACHERS & PERFORMERS. Exposing students to PERFORMANCES BY SERIOUS ENSEMBLES. Allocating SUFFICIENT TIME FOR PERFORMANCES and CLINICS: 20-minute performances for class 1, 2 and 3; 30 minutes for class 4, 5, and 6; 30 minutes for all jazz bands and choirs; followed by 50-minute ensemble workshop. Providing INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL MASTER CLASSES: 50-minute instrumental clinic sessions occur on the Saturday, with Junior High level in the morning and Senior High in the afternoon. MASSED ENSEMBLE. Voice massed ensembles will perform at the evening concerts. GUEST ARTISTS in the past we have had Allen Vizzutti and many other wellknown artists. Three pieces are recommended: two pieces from the festival list and 1 piece on their own. A list of the music will be available at WWW.CANTANDO.ORG in January 2014. ENSEMBLES AND FESTIVAL FEES Concert Band and Wind Ensembles – $70.00 per person to a maximum of $4,500.00 per ensemble. No minimum number required! Concert Choirs – $1,500.00 per ensemble. No Minimum number required! Jazz Bands – $750.00 per ensemble. Vocal Jazz Ensembles – $750.00 per ensemble. In addition to the above fees, Festival Packages provided exclusively by Affinity Group Tours typically include transportation and accommodation. FESTIVAL EVENTS Thursday, May 1, 2014 CHECK-IN & STUDENT DANCE Groups choosing a 3-Night Package will arrive and check in at the Festival desk. STUDENT DANCE & DANCE LESSONS All participants will be able to partake in an evening of ballroom dancing. The UBC Swing Kids and a local school jazz band will conduct dance lessons to music from the 1940s and 1950s. After the lessons the students will be able to put their dance moves to the test. Prizes will be given to the best performing dance partners. Friday, May 2, 2014 PERFORMANCES & WORKSHOPS Groups choosing a 2-Night Package will arrive. Concert Bands, Wind Ensembles, Concert Choirs, and Jazz Groups each give an Adjudicated Performance, followed by a 50-Minute Workshop. Each ensemble receives recorded and/or written comments. GROUP PHOTOGRAPH OPPORTUNITY after your performance. MASSED CHOIRS Massed voice rehearsal takes place in the afternoon CONDUCTING WORKSHOP Teachers participate in free conductors workshop. EVENING FESTIVAL CONCERT First evening Showcase Concert. Along with Massed choir participants. Saturday, May 3, 2014 PERFORMANCES & WORKSHOPS CONTINUE…. INSTRUMENTAL & VOICE MASTER CLASSES Instrumentalists participate in 50-minute Instrument intensives with leaders in the field of band development and education. Vocalists participate by voice in 50-minute Voice intensives with choral specialists and in massed choir workshops.
