June 11, 2015 Singles, Doubles Championships Up for Grabs This Weekend Eight singles players and seven doubles teams will take to the hardcourts at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis this weekend to settle the 34th singles and 25th doubles state championships in girls tennis. Four singles and three doubles matches will be played in the quarterfinal round on Friday beginning at 2 pm ET/ 1 pm CT. Saturday morning’s semifinal round begins at 10 am ET followed by the state championship and consolation matches at 2 pm. A detailed schedule is listed below. Five of the eight singles players enter the weekend with unblemished season records led by defending state champion Denise Azcui of Bloomington South (26‐0). Azcui (pictured right) will meet Chesterton senior Meg Modesto (21‐1) in the quarters. Azcui was presented the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award following the team competition on Saturday. The award is based on demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. In other quarterfinal round contests, Evansville Memorial sophomore Mackenzie Myers (27‐0) will take on Pendleton Heights junior Emma McCardwell (29‐0) in a matchup of undefeated players. Fort Wayne Canterbury senior Leah Barnes (24‐0) will face sophomore Lauren Winchell of Christian Academy of Indiana (29‐1). Barnes competed in the state finals her first two years and finished as the runner‐up as a freshman in 2012. And North Central (Indianapolis) junior Claire Reifeis (24‐0) is set to play Carmel freshman Kiersten Carlson (22‐2). Carlson helped the Greyhounds capture their third consecutive team title last Saturday but Reifeis is responsible for both of Carlson’s defeats this year. Carmel’s doubles team of Emma Love and Lauryn Padgett (18‐ 0) drew the bye into Saturday’s semifinals, courtesy of winning the team championship last weekend. Love is one‐half of last year’s doubles state championship pair when she teamed with Molly Fletchall. Love and Padgett await the winner between Amanda Padilla and Regina Padilla Llaguno of Culver Academies (19‐2) and Seymour’s Karen Dringenburg and Emma Wood (12‐0), the only other unbeaten tandem in the field. Only three schools have won the girls tennis “triple crown” – winning the state tournaments in the team competition, singles tournament and doubles tournament – North Central (Indianapolis) in 1977, Evansville Memorial in 1995 and Park Tudor in 1998. Results will be available at IHSAA.org well as on Twitter @IHSAA1 following each session. State Finals Site: Park Tudor School, 7200 N. College Avenue, Indianapolis. Dates: June 12‐13, 2015. Admission: $5 per person per day. Note: For each player(s) listed below, the first record indicates regular season, the second indicates state tournament. Add both for overall season record.
