Many congratulations also to Steve for winning Player of the Year. This is an impressive double achievement! Richard Ray has won the Six Partners for the third year in succession. Very well done! Look at the “Competitions” page on our website to see the runners up in these three events which run throughout the year. HICKO This stands for Hampshire Inter-Club Knock-Out. It is a handicapped knock out competition for teams of four. Basingstoke have 3 teams in it, and I am pleased to report that 2 of these (Andy Fry’s team and Andrew Ferguson’s team) are already through to the semi-final, and my team is in the quarter final, still to be arranged against a Newbury team. Simple Systems simultaneous Six Hampshire clubs took part in this event. Steve & Gill Woodward were the highest scoring Basingstoke pair, coming 9th over all with 59.25%. Neil Featonby & Helen Dye were 10th with 58.48%. Well done! Simmons Cup A team of 16 mixed/married Basingstoke pairs played for the annual Simmons Cup v Newbury on 26th November. As usual it was a most pleasant afternoon with a delicious tea, but unfortunately we didn’t manage to retain the trophy this time. Congratulations to the Newbury team. December events Teams of four will be on Monday 5th December. Please let me know if you are looking for team mates and I will do my best to help. The next round of the Tuesday League is the following day: 6th December. The Chidwick Cup, Hampshire’s annual charity simultaneous in aid of the Hampshire Air Ambulance will be played in our club on Friday 9th. Table money will be £4.00 for members and £5.00 for visitors. Of that, £2.00 per player will go to the charity. Please note that all members are most welcome to participate. We raised £60 for Children in Need in November and hope to be able to donate a good sum to the Air Ambulance, another very worthy cause. The first round of the new Six Partners takes place on Monday 12th. As we have some new members I should explain the rules again for the benefit of anyone who has not taken part in this before. There is one round every month on alternate Mondays and Fridays from December 2016 to November 2017. If, by the end of the competition, you have played with at least six different partners on these evenings, you will be eligible to win. You will score the average of your percentages on these six occasions. If you play with more than six different partners, your best six scores will count, and if you play with the same partner more than once, your best score with that partner will count. So, nothing to lose! It’s always interesting and challenging to play with a variety of partners and you only have to do this six times in the year! (Of course you can play with them as many times as you wish.) I hope no-one will misunderstand and think they have to play with six different partners on the same night. No, just one partner, and it is just a normal duplicate pairs evening, so Six Partners may be a bit of a misnomer. Please note that even if you do not wish to participate in this competition, you can still play in every round with your regular partner or anyone else and win or lose as usual on the night. Christmas Party I’m sure everyone knows by now that this year’s Christmas party for all members will be on Wednesday 14th December in the Chute Recreation Ground, Vyne Road, Sherborne St John. RG24 9 HY. Do sign up as soon as possible (individually or as a partnership) on the club notice board as numbers will be limited to 80. The very popular John Glasscock Jazz Group will be playing light hearted festive music as we arrive and during the meal. There will be free drinks and laid back, entertaining bridge with lots of prizes. Please e-mail Sam Golding ([email protected]) or telephone 01252 811228 to let her know what you will be bringing in the way of food or if you intend to bring a raffle prize. The communal party two years ago was a great success which we hope to repeat this time. Please tick the entry form on the notice board if you would be willing to bring a folding card table. There are plenty of chairs in the hall but we will have to supply our own tables. AGM The AGM was well attended this year with a good mix of members. Sandra Ruffell who has been on the committee for many years, both as Treasurer and Secretary, has decided to step down. She was thanked for all her hard work and support and presented with a gift and a bouquet of flowers. Her place as secretary will be taken by John Glasscock. Stan Babb who has also served for many years on the committee now finds he has less time available due to moving house and is also stepping down. Stan was also thanked for his invaluable contribution to the club, especially overseeing all the recent construction work and carrying out many of the jobs himself. He was also presented with a gift from the members. I am delighted to report that Andrew Ferguson and Tracey Adams have agreed to join the committee. Annual subscriptions will go up to £20.00 as from October 2017. The minutes of the meeting will be published in the Members Area of our website. You can see photographs of all the prize winners by clicking AGM photos on the left hand menu of the home page. I’m attaching our Christmas quiz, produced as usual by Jan Yates. Please send your answers to [email protected] or give them to Jan at the club before 12th December. She tells me the answers are all connected with Shakespeare, but are not necessarily from the plays, and some contain only two words. The winner will be announced at the Christmas party, and there will be a prize, but you will need to look at the website afterwards to see the answers. I wish all our members a very happy Christmas.
