2013 Coaches’ Reports Game Results Best and Fairest Votes Player Stats. Supers Coach’s Report 2013 With Purpose Bayside Saints commenced preparations for the 2013 season by taking a dramatically different approach and appointing a co-coaching team for the Over 35s. This predicated on two main factors: 1. The belief that no one was able to do the amount of work the previous coach had undertaken 2. The misplaced 'co-captain' approach seen at AFL level which appears to have finally run its race. In placing Brent Ward and Marcus Barber at the helm Bayside Saints have led the way for what will likely be a more common occurrence in years to come with complementary coaching capability being used to both add to, and spread the workload. Pre-Season: It would be fair to say that Pre-Season was for many players 'different'. Different location, different drills, different players and the introduction of the 3 Ps - Protection, Position, and 'Pain on the Opposition' (scoreboard pressure) The Coaching team had determined that overall the club would benefit from an improvement in ball handling skills particularly by foot with the consistent warm up drill throughout the year. In addition the drills were designed to 'hide' the workload. It is anticipated in the coming season that more emphasis will be placed on the Protection drills to sharpen our intent to Protect our team mates. Fitness overall was good leading into the season though match preparation was lacking with our one hit-out insufficient to prepare us for the first match against Peninsula. It is likely that more drill of a match style nature will be incorporated into preseason. The ladder had us placed about right for the season's efforts, though the missed % against Eastern may have had us one place higher. Overall though, we failed to capitalise to win games that we should have won (Mordialloc), with the Cranbourne loss particularly disappointing. Our win early in the season against eventual premier Frankston (and a pretty good effort in the return game with no one on the bench, relying on contributions from masters players to help out for a half), along with a great effort in the final game against Peninsula showed that we have what it takes to match the best in the competition. What the season also showed was that even a half or one quarter lapse in Purpose and forgetting the impact of the 3P's can open to door to an opposition. As a result, winnable games were turned into undesirable outcomes. The competition is an even enough playing field to show that on the day, any side can be a winner. That said, we've had some great input from new players down to the club (good recruiting by Scott Bayes in the off season) and some of our other players showed significant steps toward becoming very good footballers. It's also becoming clearer that to go from being able to match it with anyone, to being able to beat anyone, another one or two younger sets of legs would be handy. I believe we averaged about 43years on the ground this year - it's probably a couple of years or so more than what we need with at least three players able to play 47s. We need to attract down another four or five good movers who've just moved into the 35yo zone. On a personal note I hope I've shown that my thoughts are well beyond just playing footy. I see my role as tackling the much bigger issue of health and mindsets, with football as the vehicle. I'd like to thank Brent for accepting the co-coaching role and for his many insights during the week and game days, as well as for handling the incoming phone calls. Thanks to to everyone who helps out during the week, from pinning bodies back together to goal umpiring, to team sheets, runners and time keeping. In all seriousness lads, the people do a truckload of work to make it much easier for us during the year. Congrats to Neil in the 52s, Joey for another fine year and finally to Adam and the Masters team for adding to the trophy cabinet - delightful results for all involved and the club. We have grown in numbers which is a reflection of the committee coaches and players of this great club. Looking back on the season after a start of 2 losses to Peninsula and Frankston the season was already on the line. Wins followed against Eastern away and Carrum at home to square up the ledger at 2 and 2. After a hard fought win over Beaconsfield at home we travelled to Mordialloc. This was the turning point of the year when the master’s way of footy started Handball back, Sheppard, Talk and have fun. Lauchy also that day telling the worst joke of the year .We welcomed Chief into the side that day and Wardy went to center half back. Another away game saw us come up against Cranbourne and another win. This saw us climb the ladder once again and a finals birth was there for the taking. A round 8 win against Eastern and we climbed into 3rd position on the ladder. Frankston at Frankston one of the best all round performances of the year. We wanted top spot. The feeling in the rooms before the game was of confidence and a winning attitude. A 25pt victory saw us on top spot by 1.5% with one round to go. The top 3 sides were only separated by 5% all on 7 and 2 win /loss record. The last round produced an amazing result; we smashed Peninsula by 100 pts. With a 5 goal to zip 3rd quarter into the breeze, we finished on top Semi Final v Cranbourne Nerves and the way Cranbourne played that day saw the scores level at half time. Who was going to crack first? We switched and ran the ball steadied and lead by 3 goal at the final change. I asked for a shut down last quarter and got it. One goal each in the final quarter and we ran out 22pt victors. TJ was unbelievable in the ruck all day. Scott Shearer hitting up from the forward line and the tireless efforts of our running men all day kept Cranbourne to 3 goals Grand Final v Frankston What a great day for the Masters and the whole football club. Hard to explain the feeling of coaching a winning Grand Final but the joy on the faces of the players, their wives, girlfriends, children and their mums and dads will be something that will stick with me forever. It was an arm wrestle all day with us in front by the barest of margins at ¾ time. The game was there to be won. It was all about playing for your mates, contest after contest. A great team effort, a 12 point victory and the celebrations started. Be very proud of what you have achieved this year There are many thanks to be sent out. Marcus, Wardy and Joey thank you for your support this year. Abe, Billio, Scott Shearer thanks for your positive input for the whole year All the new players Anthony, Shane, Ben, Mick, Chris, Alex, Sean, Tony, Judda, Chief, Scott B and Brian what a fantastic bunch of new blokes into the football club yep that includes you Brian. The training staff led by Kylie thanks for looking after the boys this year I know they appreciate it. Billy D, SS, Simo, and to all those who helped on the boundary line this year, thanks. A massive Thank you to every player who pulled on a Bayside Saints Masters jumper this year. I’d like to congratulate all coaches and staff for their time and effort this year that contributed to a successful year. In particular Spaz and the Masters on going back to back, which is a remarkable effort. This year saw a lot of new faces to the club that says we must be doing something right. The Legends welcomed seven new faces to the team and it took us a few games to come to terms with it. After a very close game and a loss in our first two games we really started to turn things around. So much so we had a remarkable season to finish with two losses for the year and finish second on the ladder. We played some outstanding football with a few standout performances, but overall this year our football was really consistent. So the standard has been set for next year. I’d like to thank Peter Rayson our captain, and also Al Gailey our vice-captain, who led by example and offered continuous support and encouragement. To our team manager, Teresa Veli, thank you for your tireless effort and support. We couldn’t do it without someone so organized. To Jason Barnard for being our goal umpire at our home games. To the supporters who come to watch us play, it’s good to play in front of someone. To the footy club for making it fun to coach - thank you very much. GO SAINTS. Joe Remman.
