The 23 regular season wins were USC’s most since the 1992 team also won 23. USC’s 45 wins the last two seasons are the second-most in a twoseason stretch in school history behind the 46 combined wins in during the 2001 and 2002 and 2007 and 2008 seasons. USC IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT -- USC is 12-18 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, which reflects one loss in 2008 vacated due to NCAA penalty. USC lost 70-69 to Providence in the first round last season, when it allowed a layup with 1.5 seconds left on an inbounds pass. Prior to that game, USC’s last appearance in the NCAA Tournament came in 2011 when it lost 59-46 to VCU in a First Four game played in Dayton, Ohio, USC’s only other appearance at the First Four. VCU went on to reach the Final Four. USC was in four of five NCAA Tournaments from 2007-11 and this is the first back-to-back appearances since three-straight from 200709. USC reached the Final Four in 1940 and 1954, the regional final in 2001 and the regional semifinal in 2007. BREAKING DOWN PROVIDENCE -- Providence (20-12, 10-8) had won six consecutive games before falling 70-58 to No. 23 Creighton in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals on March 9. Providence has four players averaging in double figures, led by junior forward Rodney Bullock at 15.7 points per game. Bullock hit a game-winning layup and finished with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds in USC’s 70-69 first-round loss to Providence in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, held in Raleigh, N.C. The Friars’ head coach is Ed Cooley (123-79 in six seasons). USC is 0-2 all-time against Providence, losing in last year’s NCAA Tournament and falling 70-66 at home on Jan. 26, 1972. USC FALLS IN PAC-12 QUARTERFINALS -- USC missed its first eight shots and trailed wire-to-wire despite a valiant comeback attempt in a 76-74 loss to UCLA in the Pac-12 Quarterfinals at T-Mobile Arena on March 9. USC’s cold spell was not short-lived as it started 1-for-14 and 4-for-22 from the floor before the offense started to click. USC trailed 32-18 with five minutes left in the first half, but closed to 38-35 at the break. UCLA opened with a 12-2 run to start the second half to open the lead back up to 13 before the Trojans rallied again. USC cut it to a two-point deficit twice in the final 4:31, but could get no closer. Bennie Boatwright’s three-point basket with 4.1 left made it 76-74, but UCLA got the ball inbounds and avoided being fouled. Jordan McLaughlin led USC with 18 points and had 6 assists. The game was played before 18,153, the largest quarterfinal session in Pac-12 Tournament history. SMU ON DECK -- The winner of USC-Providence will play SMU (29-4, 17-1) on March 17 in Tulsa, Okla. His arrival on campus immediately created a tangible buzz around the program. After bringing in his recruits and establishing his system during the first two seasons, his Trojans took a big leap forward in the 2015-16 season. USC went 21-13 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011. The Trojans had an 8.0 game improvement from the 2014-15 season which was tops among the Power 5 conference teams. USC played an exciting brand of basketball, averaging over 80 points per game and ranking among the nation’s top 20 in offensive output. They matched a school record with four 100-point games in a season, after not having broken the century mark since 2002. The Trojans set the school record with 266 three-pointers made and were in the top 25 in the country in three-point percentage. The high-flying athletic style was also in effect in the 2015-16 season as the Trojans averaged over 3.5 dunks per game and set the USC season record with 182 blocks, ranking in the top 15 in the country. Enfield has brought in a strong 4-man recruiting class for this season, following the addition of a pair of top-50 recruits for the 2015-16 season and the No. 12-ranked class in 2014-15. Enfield’s USC teams have improved their record each season and he now has a 68-63 record in 4 seasons as the Trojans’ head coach and an overall career record of 109-91 in 6 seasons. Enfield captivated the nation during the 2013 season as the head coach at Florida Gulf Coast University as he guided the first No. 15 seed into the NCAA Sweet 16 with impressive wins over No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego St. and introduced the world to “Dunk City,” the nickname for FGCUs high-flying and high-speed offense which often ended with thunderous dunks. In Enfield’s two-year run at FGCU, the Eagles won 41 games, advanced to the A-Sun Championship game both seasons - its first 2 playing at the Division I level. FGCU had a 41-28 record in his 2 seasons as head coach (2011-12, 2012-13), equaling the win total of the program the previous 4 seasons. Prior to FGCU, Enfield spent the previous 5 seasons (2007-11) as an assistant coach at Florida State, helping the Seminoles to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including the Sweet 16 in 2011. FSU posted four 20-win seasons during his time on the staff and won 31 ACC games, the second-most in the conference behind Duke. In 2011 and 2012, FSU became the first program since Georgetown (1991-92) to lead the nation in defensive field goal percentage 2 straight seasons. Enfield helped FSU sign three straight Top 25 classes. He began his coaching career in the NBA, serving as the shooting coach for Milwaukee (1995, 1996). Then he was an assistant coach with Boston for two seasons (1999, 2000). Enfield played four seasons (1988-91) at Johns Hopkins, scoring a program-record 2,025 points. He also set the NCAA all-divisions career free throw percentage record of 92.5 percent, making 431-of-466 free throws. He was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. PRESEASON PROPS - Jordan McLaughlin has been named to the 20-player watch list for the Bob Cousy Award recognizing the nation’s top point guard. Bennie Boatwright has been named to the 20-player watch list for the Karl Malone Award for the nation’s top power forward. THE 14-0 START -- USC began the season 14-0 which ranks tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in school history and was the best USC start since the 1971 season. TROJANS BUILTING STEP-BY-STEP -- The Trojans have made steady progress since Andy Enfield became the head coach for the 2013-14 season. The 2015-16 season produced a big step forward and pretty much an advancement in every statistical category. Also, USC was 9-9 in Pac-12 play last season after being 3-15 in 2015 and 2-16 in 2014. 2013-14 2014-15 -2015-16 -- FG% .439 .422 .460 FG Def. .430 .422 .417 3PT% .291 .329 .387 3PT Def. 3PM .323 146 .330 170 .325 266 FT% .670 .634 .676 Reb/G 37.0 35.9 39.3 Assists 404 397 504 Blocks 141 133 182 Points 2258 2143 2737 PPG 70.6 67.0 80.5 Record 11-21 12-20 21-13 TROJANS IN THE RANKINGS -- USC is unranked this week and was No. 25 in the AP poll and in the USA Today Coaches Poll on Jan. 9, its fifth consecutive week in the rankings. TROJANS BECOMING ROAD WARRIORS - Maybe the road isn’t so long and winding anymore for USC as its 76-55 win at San Diego on Nov. 30 and its 65-63 win at Texas A&M made it six consecutive nonconference road victories (also at Dayton in 2014, at Boston College and New Mexico in 2015 and at UCSB in 2016). USC finished 4-5 in conference road games this season after losing its last three, missing out on being over .500 in Pac-12 road games for the first time since 2008. It opened up conference play with a win at Oregon State on Dec. 28, snapping a six-game road losing streak in Pac-12 games. USC was 3-24 in Pac-12 road games in Enfield’s first three seasons (1-8 in 2014, 0-9 in 2015 & 2-7 in 2016). The loss at UCLA on Feb. 18 snapped a streak of 3 consecutive conference road games, USC’s longest streak since winning 4 straight during the 2008 season. Chimezie Metu hit a jump hook from 10-feet away just outside the paint on the left side to give USC the lead with 29 seconds remaining and the Trojans went on to defeat Colorado 7168 in Boulder, Colo. on Jan. 15. Elijah Stewart added a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining and George King’s three-point just before the buzzer glanced off the rim and the Trojans had its first win in Colorado since the Buffaloes joined the Pac-12 in 2012. USC led 67-60 with 2:45 remaining, but Colorado scored the next 8 points and took the lead on a 3-pointer by Xavier Johnson which just beat the shot clock with 47 seconds remaining, setting up Metu’s heroics. Metu scored 20 of his career-high 24 points in the first half and finished 11 of 14 in shooting. USC trailed by 11 points at 22-11, but cut the deficit to 35-34 at halftime. USC’s comeback was its eight from a deficit of 9 or more points this season. Colorado entered the game last in the conference in 3-point shooting percent, but made 7 of 11 attempts in the first half and finished 11 of 24 (45.8 percent). USC forced 17 turnovers which led to a 20-5 advantage on points off turnovers. USC outscored Colorado 36-22 on points in the paint. Arizona’s Lauri Markkanen banked in a long 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down to put an end to USC’s second-half comeback with 33 seconds remaining and the Trojans fell 73-67 to No. 14/No. 13 Arizona at the Galen Center on Jan. 19. USC trailed by 23 points 5 minutes into the second half at 44-21, before cutting the lead to 67-64 prior to Markkanen’s shot. ASU had the ball trailing 8279 with 14 seconds remaining when Chimezie Metu blocked Torian Graham’s layup attempt. ASU maintained possession and Graham missed a contested 3-pointer with 6 seconds left, but USC’s Jonah Mathews had a turnover on the inbounds pass. After an ASU timeout and an intentional foul by Stewart, as the Trojans had fouls to give, ASU’s Shannon Evans had his 3-pointer from the corner blocked by Jordan McLaughlin to preserve USC’s win. McLaughlin had 18 points and 8 assists in the game, while Mathews, making his first career start, added 14. Stewart’s points were one off his career high and he tied his career best for 3-pointers.
