UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH WALES PRIFYSGOL DE CYMRU Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science UX / UI Designer Grade E, £28,143 - £32,600 per annum Fixed Term Contract to 31/12/2020 The University of South Wales has secured ERDF funding to establish the Centre of Excellence in Mobile & Emerging Technologies (CEMET). This will be the first of its type in the United Kingdom. CEMET will build on existing expertise, and the strong digital economy in Wales, to collaborate with a range of businesses on the delivery of a number of developmental and applied research projects. CEMET will be a specialist centre, undertaking applied research into emerging technologies (including IoT, AR, VR, AI, Serious Game Technology, Big Data, Cyber Security, Sensor Technology and M-Health) and their use and adoption within businesses. The Centre will build on the existing capability held in Wales in the Digital field, by undertaking collaborative R&D projects focusing on the development of products and services that have the potential to support Welsh businesses across all sectors. Reporting directly to the Programme Manager, the post holder will be primarily responsible for leading on all UX / UI activity for a range of R&D projects undertaken by CEMET in collaboration with SMEs. The applicant will have experience of engaging with the private sector in order to define, develop and document UI design and UX requirements for hardware / software applications. JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: UX / UI Designer Permanent Contract GRADE & SALARY: Grade E, £28,143 - £32,600 per annum DEPARTMENT: Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science Responsible to: Programme Manager Main Purpose of role: The UX / UI Designer will report directly to the Programme Manager and will be responsible for fulfilling the critical role of leading on all UX (User Experience) and UI (User Interface) activity for a range of collaborative research and development projects undertaken by CEMET. Principal Responsibilities and Duties: Leading on all the aspects of the UX / UI process, including - user research / testing, information architecture and interaction design Create and maintain a CEMET brand style guide Liaise with SMEs and the Product Owner in order to collate business, interface, and information architecture requirements for hardware and software applications Create wireframes, interaction workflows, annotated mock-ups and layouts for all collaborative R&D projects as required Create visual components and graphical assets as required To undertake collaborative R&D projects in line with Scrum project management methodology Work with the Development Team to deliver the final product Undertake training and development in support of the role When required, to perform work outside normal hours, at reasonable notice, in order to maintain service delivery to our customers Other duties as assigned by the Programme Manager, Commercial Manager or Co-Directors PERSON SPECIFICATION SKILLS AND ABILITIES Essential a) Exceptional design skills b) Strong conceptualisation ability c) Strong visual communication ability d) Strong drawing skills and sketchbook technique e) Effective communicator to a variety of audiences including colleagues and SME partners f) Proven communication skills (written and oral) g) Customer focussed approach to the delivery of services KNOWLEDGE Essential h) Knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Fireworks or equivalent i) Understanding of responsive design j) Knowledge of prototyping tools EXPERIENCE Essential k) Experienced in analysing customer requirements l) Proven experience of successfully defining, developing and documenting UX / UI design and interaction requirements / specifications with clients TRAINING Essential o) Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject and / or relevant work experience OTHER REQUIREMENTS Essential p) Ability to be flexible in their approach to working hours q) Willingness to occasionally attend meetings / events across Wales, including overnight stays, as appropriate Desirable Desirable Desirable m) Experience of working as part of Agile / Scrum project team n) Experience of developing in-house style guides Desirable Desirable r) Ability to speak Welsh It is essential that when making an application, candidates specifically address the criteria set out in the Person Specification.
