ST. THOMAS SCHOOL
2016 ANNUAL BOARD MEETING
APPENDIX
VISION
A recognized leader in early childhood through 8th Grade, St. Thomas School’s educational journey is
defined by a cognitively rigorous program with an emphasis on developing character, leadership, and a
passion for learning and achievement.
MISSION
The mission of STS is to develop responsible citizens of a global society. In partnership with parents, we
inspire and motivate intellectually curious students. Our small, nurturing environment supports the
acquisition of a broad academic foundation with an emphasis on critical thinking, leadership skills, and
the development of strong character and spiritual awareness.
OUR DIVERSITY MISSION
St. Thomas School invites, welcomes, and celebrates diverse cultures, individuals, experiences, and
perspectives within our school community and the world beyond our doors. The members of our school
community comprise a partnership of all constituents, including students, families, faculty, staff, trustees,
alumni, and neighbors. We believe our most critical role is to nurture the development of tomorrow’s
responsible and engaged global citizens. Further, we believe that understanding and exploring the
connections among us makes us stronger. Together, our shared values of gratitude, responsibility,
respect, courage, integrity, tolerance, compassion, perseverance, and generosity foster an inclusive and
multicultural learning environment.
Being a part of the St. Thomas School family means being open to the contributions of every member and
recognizing that a sense of belonging stimulates our institution’s growth and strengthens our community.
Celebrating and appreciating diversity is an ongoing process that requires open dialogue and exploration
of ideas and beliefs. At St. Thomas School, our students begin a journey toward global citizenship that
they will follow throughout their lives.

THE PARTNERSHIP: THE BOARD AND HEAD OF SCHOOL
PRINCIPLES OF GOOD PRACTICE
•
A Trustee actively supports and promotes the school’s mission.
•
A Trustee is knowledgeable about the school’s mission and goals and current operations and issues.
•
The board sets policy; the administration implements policy. An individual trustee does not become
involved in specific management, personnel, or curricular issues.
•
A Trustee accepts and supports board decisions and respects board confidentiality.
•
A Trustee guards against conflict of interest and takes care to separate the interests of the school from
the specific needs of a particular child or constituency.
•
A Trustee has the responsibility to support the school and its Head and to demonstrate that support
within the community.
•
Authority is vested in the board as a whole. A Trustee who learns of an issue has the obligation to
bring it to the Head of School, or to the board chair, and must not deal with the situation
individually.
•
Each Trustee, as well as the treasurer and finance committee, has fiduciary responsibility to the
school for sound financial management.
•
A Trustee contributes to the development program of the school.
STS 2016 ANNUAL COMMUNITY GATHERING - P. 13
ACCREDITATION
St. Thomas School is accredited by the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS).
Accreditation is a voluntary process that is undertaken by schools that are committed to continuous
improvement and compliance with rigorous standards set forth by the Northwest Association of
Independent Schools (NWAIS). St. Thomas School has been a fully accredited member of NWAIS for
decades. In order to be re-accredited, STS embarked on a two-year process which included a
comprehensive self-study and a review by a visiting team of experienced educators and school leaders.
The self-study process involved the entire community – serving on or leading committees, participating
in several surveys, and meeting directly with the visiting team. This was an exceptional opportunity to
reflect on best practices, acknowledge our institutional strengths, and create a roadmap for ongoing
improvement. The School wishes to thank parents, the Board of Trustees, students, faculty, and staff for
their incredible involvement and leadership.
As a result of this process STS remains fully accredited with an impressive number of commendations!
Results of this reaccreditation process were utilized during the creation of the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan. Read
more about the Accreditation process with NWAIS at: http://www.stthomasschool.org/page.cfm?p=2929
In addition to being a fully accredited school through NWAIS, STS is:

approved by the Washington State Board of Education

a full member of the National Association of Independent Schools

licensed by the Department of Early Learning

a member of the Washington Federation of Independent Schools

a fully accredited member of the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS)




TEST SCORES
Students at STS take the CTP 4 standardized test (published by ERB) each spring. Individual
test scores are sent home to parents and these scores, along with grade level tests scores, are
tracked and analyzed by the faculty and administration. Trends over time help inform the
curriculum and provide an important external academic benchmark. Test scores are only one
measure of student achievement – a “snapshot” of a student’s performance – and should be
considered only within the context of internal assessments.
In the following graphs, mean scale scores (a conversion of raw scores) are reported. Scale
scores allow a student’s performance in a test to be compared over time, as well as to other
students within a group (a norming sample). Scale scores can be reliably compared across time
or across students or groups of students. Scores are not comparable across subtests. In other
words, students do not perform less well in math compared to reading. Please note that two
norming groups are reported. St. Thomas School scores (STS) are compared to Independent
School (IN) norms, which represent highly selective independent schools worldwide.
