High School Tryouts:
May 13-16 from 3:00 - 5:00pm
Mandatory Parent Meeting – April 29th at 5:30pm
Dear Parent/Guardian and Student:
Baker Cheerleading
Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of the Cheerleading Program at Baker School. We will meet on
Monday, April 29th at 5:30 p.m. in the Baker School Media Center to discuss rules and regulations, and to answer
any questions that you may have. This parent meeting is mandatory for your child to tryout. The $20.00
clinic fee and parent permission/physical forms will also be collected at this time. The fee will cover the cost to run
the tryout which includes judging. Your child must have a current physical, notarized parent permission form and
an eligible GPA to participate in the clinic and tryout for the cheerleading team.
It is important that you are aware of the high level of commitment that is required and the standard of excellence
that is expected from each of the squad members. Before completing the registration packet, please consider the
following:
A clinic will be held on May 13th – 15th from 2:45-5:00pm. Tryouts will be conducted in the Baker gym on May 16th
from 3:00-6:00. See packet information about what to wear to the clinic and tryouts. Although we appreciate your
support for your child, no spectators will be allowed in or around the gym during tryouts or the clinic preceding
tryouts. The 2013-2014 Baker squad members will be posted around 8:00pm following tryouts.
Cheerleading is a year-long commitment and requires after school time attendance nearly every day of the week
all year long as well as in the evenings and on weekends for scheduled sporting events. In the height of the
various sport seasons it is not uncommon to have two or more evening sporting events per week.
Cheerleading does not only encompass football, but also includes basketball.
Being a cheerleader involves significant financial obligations. Last year, the costs for camp, uniforms, and
miscellaneous expenses were between $500-$700 for each squad member. Therefore, it is imperative to
fundraise. Please be aware that this can be costly, however we are implementing ways to fundraise and each
member will have ample opportunity to raise money for herself/himself. Therefore, all cheerleaders are required
to participate in regular fundraising activities. We will have group fundraisers as well as individual fundraisers.
There will be a minimum requirement amount for group fundraisers. Any cheerleader who does not raise the
minimum required amount will need to pay for what she has not raised.
All cheerleaders are required to attend the mandatory summer UCA camp. The camp will be July 8-10, 2013.
Camp fees of $200.00 must be paid at the parent meeting on May 17th.
We will also practice during the summer 2-3 days a week (starting in July) for 2-3 hours each day as well as
organize a Youth Cheer Camp! There will be several weeks that we will not practice (June); a calendar will be
given out after tryouts. Please schedule your summer plans around this.
Your interest and cooperation with our program at Baker School is appreciated. Please review the attached copy
of the BS Cheer Constitution, approved by the Baker School Advisory Committee, and discuss it with your
daughter or son. We have high expectations for our cheerleaders and expect each one to follow the policies. Our
cheerleaders are ambassadors for our school and should act accordingly.

TRYOUTS
 The seniors from the 2012-13 squad will be present during the clinic teaching and reviewing all material.
All prospective team members will learn a cheer, dance, chant and proper jump techniques. We will
conduct a mock tryout to demonstrate the proper way to enter, stand, perform, and exit before dismissing
on the last day of clinic. We will also have mats available for those who wish to tumble for their tryout
session.
 All participants will be alphabetized. Each prospective member will receive a tryout number that should be
displayed in an area that the judges can see. There will be 3 judges, two sponsors, and one score
tabulator.
 The sponsors will meet with the judges before the tryout begins to ask them to critique ability and look for
potential. We will instruct them not to count off for nervousness. The judges may have each participant
perform the cheer, chant and dance as many times as needed for them to make their evaluations. Each
candidate will perform the required jumps and an optional jump. After jumps, each candidate will be asked
to perform one gymnastics skill. A mat will be provided, but there will be no spots allowed. At any time
DURING THE PERFORMANCE, a participant may ask to restart (once). Once the participant leaves the
tryout area, the tryout is OVER and she will not be allowed to tryout again. There will not be any callbacks.
 The final list for the Varsity squad and Middle School will be posted after 8:00PM on Thursday, May 16th on
the front office windows.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
Important Information regarding the Scoring Process
It is very important to communicate the scoring process to all tryout participants and their parents. The way scores
are earned and used are:
 Teacher recommendation:
Average of 4 recommendations ÷ 2 (25% of total score)
 Tryout score
75 total points from each judge
(75% of total score)
 Bonus Points - Years of experience as an Okaloosa County School Cheerleader:
1 year = 1 point added to overall score
2 years = 2 points added to overall score
3 years = 3 points added to overall score
 Gymnastics scores:
No skill displayed = 0 points
Back handspring = 1 point
Round-off back handspring = 2 points
Round-off back handspring series = 3 points
Round-off tuck = 3.5 points
Round-off back HS back tuck = 4 points
Standing tuck = 5 points
The Varsity squad will consist of the top 12-14 scores.
The Middle School squad will consist of the top 13-14 scores.
As tryout registration packets are returned, numbers, names, grade levels, scores from teacher recommendations,
and points from years of experience are entered into a computer program for each participant.
At the time of the tryouts, the participant’s score from the three judges is entered into the program by reference
number only and tabulated with points already earned. The program will then order the scores from top to bottom.
The top 12-14 score getters will be the Varsity squad and the top 13-14 score getters will be the Middle School
squad. The final squad roster will be posted after 8:00PM on Thursday, May 16th on the glass window by the front
office.
Thanks for your interest in becoming a Baker cheerleader.

and be present for all games and practices. I have read the rules and regulations of the squad and
understand that the violation of any of these rules may lead to temporary or permanent suspension from
the squad. I understand and give permission for my daughter to ride with the sponsor and/or other school
personnel on the school provided transportation. I understand that all attached forms must be completed
and returned by ________________, or my child will not be able to tryout. I understand that my child must
attend all practices (unless excused by the sponsor/administration) and tryout sessions or my child will
not be considered for the cheerleading position.
I understand that qualified judges will evaluate my daughter and I agree to abide by the decision of said
judges. I also understand that the judge’s decision is final and that I will accept whatever is decided.
I understand that the cheerleader clinics and tryouts are closed to all spectators.
I understand that cheerleading at Baker School is a large financial responsibility. Parents will need to
fundraise to help supplement their payments.
I understand by the very nature of the activity, cheerleading and gymnastics carry a risk of physical injury.
No matter how careful the participant and coaches are, how many spotters are used, and what landing
surface is used, the risk cannot be eliminated. This risk of injury includes minor injuries such as muscle
pulls, dislocation, and broken bones. The risk also includes catastrophic injuries such as permanent
paralysis or even death from landing or falls on the back, neck, or head. I understand these risks and will
not hold Baker School or any of its personnel responsible in the case of accident or injury at any time.
