Introduction
The objective of this report is linking 3D model and drawing for MP2714 by using IT in fact
Computer Aided Design (CAD). So the report describing the different types of CAD
software, evaluate methods, systems of hardware requirement and hardware configurations
distinguish. In addition, industrial to use 2D engineering drawing and standard CAD systems
to produce 3D CAD models, also evaluate and identifier Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
Software 2D and 3D:
Commercial software packages
Available for distribution to the general public and comes readily packaged as often referred
to as off the shelf software call commercial software, nowadays it used to refer most software
programs. The package will regularly include a solo otherwise an executable folder, the
source or activity code and the impotent documents’ to install the program that all will
include the file. Additionally, the software package will present recommendation and support
information to know how to use the programme as well as how to install the software. This
support information may be included as paper-based with the software or usually as advice on
how to access a relevant website. Software packages are selling for system, utility and
application software. There are two categories of software which is:
1. Software system.
2. Application programme.
System Software:
All utilities that enable the computer function also include operating system, which manage
computer resources at a low level. Operating System (OS) and main part on system software
which is used to be able to the electronic case in a computer also performances the stage to
run application programme that is CAD.
There are a quantity of operating systems obtainable for different types of computer, which
that shows in table below;

Table 1 (MailMax, 1995)
Application programme:
A programme that does actual work for customer is Applications software, such as
spreadsheets, data base management and word processors systems drop beneath the type of
application system, every professional have hundreds available programmes.
In addition to that in mechanical engineering applications there are two streams whilst it
comes on software they are Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided
Manufacturing (CAM), they have difference applications, wherever Computer Aided Design
is for part designing or even a machine designing and many other features and applications
are from aerospace to show making.
Computer Aided Design vs. Manual Methods:
In this case Computer Aided Design (CAD) method have more benefits than manual method
which is all drawing tools are electronic, it can link to CNC machinery (Computer Numeric
Controlled), all the dimension in drawing the computer could keep a recode, as often as
quickly the drawing can be reproduce, it is high professional standard also be able to produce
hard copy, it can editing processes such as mirror, move, copy, etc. In addition, CAD method
be able to drawing storage is on a hard drive. In the same way manual method of equipment
have low purchase cost at the same time can see straight away any shapes, size and angel
while constructing of a full size set out.
On other hand, there are disadvantages to the both methods which are in manual the drawing
in comparison to a CAD drawing to the time that is takes to reproduce and doesn’t link to
CNC devices, should to have a great deal of space to set it out for large drawing also manual
drawings is far greater than CAD drawing so it is storage facilities required to keep. CAD
drawbacks are some shapes still difficult to draw by using CAD software, replacement cost of
the equipment is expensive to draw manual and computer equipment in climate controlled.

Hardware:
Hardware Functions:
Hardware function such as the supply system for software result. Infrequently changed in
comparison with software and data which are soft in the sense that they are readily erased,
created, or modified on the computer call (hardware of computer).
In this case, there are difference functions done by hardware components that is:
-
Data in more technical terms known as temporary storage of information done by
memory, function done by floppy disk.
-
CD-ROM and hard disk is permanent storage of info.
-
Determine processing of data where data is perform and stored work out that support
operation that the worker is doing.
-
In the computer box provide electrical power which is power supply.
-
Supports the ability for the user to communicate is interfacing to the outside
components.
The figure below shows how CAD system hardware components look like:
Figure 1 (justin, 2001)
4
Hardware Components:
According to Mikel P.Groover in his book (Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing)
configurations, capabilities and dimensions are obtainable in a variability hardware
components for CAD. Then graphic wants of the worker firm and it’s probable to choice a
CAD system that meets the specific computational.
Production firms that are not imprecate in construction would indicate a system absolutely
for drafting also design-related functions (Groover, 1983).
The main hardware components that make up a computer aided engineering system are:
-
Monitor
-
Memory
-
Keyboard
-
System Unit
-
Plotters and Printers
-
Mouse, Puck and Digitizer
-
Central Processing Unit(CPU)
-
External Storage Device (ESD)
-
Floppy disk, CD-ROM and Hard disk
Hardware Configuration:
Figure 2 (FOLEY, 1982)
The diagram describe typically configuration of hardware components in stand alone
computer aided engineering system, which would be likely more than one work station
design that consist the following:
-
Input Devices
-
Secondary Storage
5
-
Graphical Terminal
-
Central Processing Unit(CPU)
-
Plotters and other output devices
According to FOLEY and VAN DAM the work station design should have five functions
which are interface by CPU, services lead into among the system and worker, and graphic
appearance must provide digital report, produce a stable graphic image for operator and
translate computer thorough knowledge into operating functions.
Finite Element Analysis in Engineering:
In this case a design or material that is stressed also analysed for specific results of a
computer model call (Finite Element Analysis) where FEA is a curtailment, its existing
product refinement and used in new product design. FEA is the most common example of
engineering analysis and powerful future of computer aided engineering software, there are
two categories commonly of enquiry that are used in production
which are:
1. 2D Modelling
2. 3D Modelling
2D modelling is be likely to to yield less accurate consequence, allows the enquiry to be
outing on a relatively normal computer and conserves simplicity but 3D modelling produce
more accurate results while sacrificing the ability to run on all but fastest computers
effectively. In each Modelling schemes include the linear or non-linear which could make the
system behave with the programme can insert numerous functions.
Mesh is make a grid and known as programme to contain the material also structural
properties that definite the structure will react to certain loading condition. There extends a
mesh element to each of the adjacent nodes, acts like a spider web in that form each node.
While nodes are complex systems of point finite element analysis users and consigned at
certain density during the material dependent on the expected stress level of a specific part,
also previously tested material, high stress area, fillets, complex detail and corners.
Minimization and maximization are wide range of objective function available which are:
6
-
User define.
-
Stress strain, strain energy
-
Temperature, mass, volume.
-
Velocity, force, acceleration, displacement
Manual Method vs. Finite Element Analysis:
In this part Finite Element Analysis (FEA) compare to manual method while already mention
the benefit and drawbacks in software part to manual method. So the advantages of FEA are
numerical method used for solving issue which is general use, post processing system and pre
reduce time and effort of the computer programme, simplicity of the basic concept is method
does not require the user process, litheness to solve a problem user and Finite Element
Analysis is requires a huge amount that existent of FEM (Finite Element Manufacturing)
computer programme.
That’s include disadvantages of FEA and manual methods. which are in manual the drawing
in comparison to a CAD drawing to the time that is takes to reproduce and doesn’t link to
CNC devices, should to have a great deal of space to set it out for large drawing also manual
drawings is far greater than CAD drawing so it is storage facilities required to keep. And
drawbacks of Finite Element Analysis programme are complex and costly, analysis not
performed on real structure so the method is approximate and elaborate the model without
restrictions is subjective and arbitrary call calculus model.
Conclusion
To summary the whole report is off the shelf or application software could be proprietary,
and there are difference generation of programme language also object oriented while two
main types of software. Preform input, output, processing and data storage to work hardware
devices together, and the hardware to support users computing needs known as operating
system. Finally Finite Element Analysis work out in design process to decrees in time of
development, design process is recognize necessary.
