FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The 16th Annual Ashburnham-Westminster Community Benefit Hockey Game and Road Race have
been scheduled for Saturday, April 1, 2017. The Road Race will start at Briggs Elementary at 9 am.
The game will be played at the Iorio Arena on the campus of Cushing Academy in Ashburnham at 3
pm. Doors open at 2 pm, Pre-game ceremony begins at 2:30 pm.
This year’s event will benefit two families from Ashburnham. James Kaehlert is a science teacher
and athletic trainer at Cushing Academy for 9 years. He also volunteers a Cub Scout Den Leader
for Pack 18 in Ashburnham. He has also coached youth soccer in our community. In May of 2016,
cancer was discovered in his rectum, colon, liver and lungs. He was later diagnosed with Stage IV
Adenocarcinoma. James and his wife Heather have two children, Samuel (10) and Abigail (8). Ed
LaRoche is an engineer for Johnson Controls in Westminster, formerly Simplex-Grinnell. He was
diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer, non-cell carcinoma, in September of 2016. This is Ed’s third
bout with cancer. He has previously been treated for skin and prostate cancers. He and his wife,
Julie have two daughters, Lyndsey (25) and Abby (20). Both men are currently undergoing
treatment. The goal of the benefit committee is to raise money to offset the expenses associated
with those treatments.
There will be pre-game entertainment and between period interactive activities for the whole family. Game
tickets are $5.00, cash raffle tickets are $5.00, and goods/service raffle tickets are only $1.00.
We generate income for the benefit through the sale of game tickets, cash raffle tickets, cash donations,
concessions and a goods/services raffle the night of the game. Donations can be mailed to the Athol Savings
Bank, Athol Savings Bank, 52 Main St., Ashburnham, MA 01430. Please make checks payable to
