MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION YORK CONFERENCE 2008
SESSION DETAILS
A
NEW WAYS OF WORKING WITH COMPLEX DATA
James Nicholson Researcher School of Education, University of Durham
A group at Durham have developed new interfaces that allow data with up to 5 explanatory
variables to be explored interactively, and disease transmission simulations which allow the
exploration of the behaviour of parameters in complex situations.
B
GRAPHIC CALCULATORS - A FORGOTTEN FRIEND?
Stephen Kean Education Manager Casio
There is no better time to reinvigorate the teaching and learning within your classroom by using
graphic calculators. This session will provide you with useful hints and tips to make the most of
these dedicated handheld maths tools.
C
SOME PRACTICAL GEOMETRY
Keith Porteous PGCE Tutor, Secondary Mathematics University of Hull
This session will tackle a little collection of ideas for simple practical investigations, games,
puzzles, and similar activities relating to geometry in secondary mathematics courses. It will
not be ICT-based.
D
USING GAMES IN MATHEMATICS
Claire Badham Advanced Skills Teacher Driffield School
Looking at how games can be used and developed within lessons to meet objectives and how
templates of existing games can be adapted to make them quick to plan.
E
FROM PEER PARTNERSHIPS TO EFFECTIVE LEARNING COMMUNITY
David Rigby Mathematics Subject Leader and Imelda Fewlass All Saints’ RC School, York
and Andrew Gillmon Salford City Academy
Collaboration between teachers has a huge impact on retention and training. We have been
using paired peer coaching partnerships for 2 years. As a department we have also been
working collaboratively with ITT trainees using similar skills. This EPLC project was an
attempt to get a larger group of experienced teachers working together.
F
RESOURCES TO ENGAGE
Rachael Read Head of Department and AST King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford
During the session we will try out a wealth of resources developed to encourage pupils to
engage and enjoy their maths lessons; with the emphasis on problem solving, creativity and
collaboration. Every attendee is free to go away with as many of the resources and ideas for
themselves as they wish…just bring a large memory stick!
G
TEACHING USING THE ICT PROGRAMME TRINITY MATHS
Matt Dunbar Author & Director ESTARTERS LTD
Trinity Maths empowers teachers with an ICT resource covering the majority of the KS3&4
scheme of work and demonstrates exemplary practice by reinforcing a wide range of methods
pupils can easily replicate and understand. This powerful, versatile and intuitive resource can
draw algebraic graphs, model probability experiments and investigate dynamic geometry in a
style matched by few other applications. With its greater focus on literacy, key objectives and
differentiation it fulfils the needs of the idealistic teacher and the aspirational student. A free
CD-ROM of exemplar Topic Files will form the basis for some of the session.
MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION YORK CONFERENCE 2008
H
USING ICT TO ENRICH MATHEMATICS AT KS4
Tom Button On-line learning & IT Coordinator The Further Mathematics Network
This session will cover 3 main themes:
 Using mathematical software
 Useful websites
The online resources for FSMQ Additional Maths
I
SUPPORTING CURRICULUM CHANGE/ ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF TEACHING AND
LEARNING THROUGH NATIONAL STRATEGIES MATHEMATICS RESOURCES
Mick Blaylock NW Regional Advisor- Secondary Mathematics
An overview of recent National Strategy initiatives and resources including:
 Assessing Pupils Progress;
 Study Plus
 KS4 Planning Toolkit;
 Support for the implementing the new programmes of study at KS3; and
 Functional Mathematics.
J
USING EXCEL IN MATHS LESSONS
Tim Kelsey Mathematics AST Malet Lambert Language College
This session will give you the opportunity to see how some Excel programs can be used in
lessons, and give you the opportunity to write your own. A basic familiarity with Excel would
be useful.
K
SIMPLE GEOMETRY WITH ICT
Doug French
This session will look at a range of simple examples based on topics in the Key Stage 3
curriculum. It will show how dynamic geometry software like Cabri Geometry, Geometer’s
Sketchpad and Geogebra can be used to stimulate geometrical thinking at all levels.
L
DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN STUDENTS
Karen Kitchener Assistant Headteacher Raincliffe School, Scarborough
An opportunity to learn how to develop critical thinking skills through mathematics. The chance
to look at work produced by mathematics students of different ages and abilities. A planning
session to get you started in your own school.
M
USING DIGITAL VIDEO IN THE CLASSROOM
Rob Simpson Teacher South Hunsley School
Ever wondered how to liven up your lessons with a bit of interaction/multimedia experience?
Easy, bring in a Video Camera! This session will show you how to use video effectively in the
mathematics classroom (or out of it!). No experience (or camera) required!
N
CONNECTING THE LEARNING
Liz Russell AST for Teaching and Learning South Hunsley School
The combination of working with primary colleagues and the DfES “Improving Learning Box”
made me take a fresh look at how we teach GCSE maths to those pupils who find maths
challenging! This session explores how to put a scheme of learning together which connects the
learning, is themed and active.

O
OPPORTUNITIES FOR MATHEMATICS TEACHING WITH ICT: AN OVERVIEW.
Mick Blaylock NW Regional Advisor- Secondary Mathematics
Mainly a demonstration session exploring recent developments and opportunities for
mathematics teachers to exploit ICT in teaching mathematics with a particular focus on the
freely available Geogebra software.
P
THE NEW SECONDARY CURRICULUM
Nick Doran QCA Programme Adviser
We need to increase participation and achievement in mathematics. We aim to do this by
making the learners' experience more engaging, relevant and worthwhile and designing
assessments that better reflect the priorities of the new curriculum.
