[email protected] http://corshamwindband.org/ August 2015 Newsletter 2015 Summary “End of a fantastic year 2014 – 2015 My thanks to parents, committee members and all players for what has been a brilliant year including: our trip to Strasbourg; great concerts and fund raising over Christmas; recording the Children United theme; an excellent performance at the Mid Somerset Festival [we were robbed! – ed]; the introduction of Pink Floyd music and the performances with Nick Mason and on You Tube. Thank you! I wish Alice, Matthew, Joe, Ellie, Katie, Will, Ben, Sylvan and Becky well for their results as they move to the next stage of their educational journey. To you all - Thank you for all that you have achieved, you have made this year a very enjoyable and successful year! Have a relaxing and enjoyable summer.” – Sonia Blandford, MD Youth Concert Band “Well done to Spectrum for their performance in the summer concert. We played a selection of pieces that combined a mixture of the players’ old and new favourites. We were particularly pleased to manage our debut performance of Disney's 'Up', a challenging piece that we had been working on for a while. Looking back on the year, it has been wonderful to see individuals developing and improving as well as the band as a whole. Thank you to all the Spectrum players and parents; your commitment to rehearsals, festivals and events has enabled many high points and achievements over the year.” – Jo Knight “A small and enthusiastic Training band has enjoyed the summer term, with a couple of variations to the norm. Firstly, it was great to get some new Training Band music books, with easy(ish!) arrangements of songs from some of the Broadway musicals. Edelweiss was performed for the Summer Concert, and there are other pieces to work on for future performances. Secondly, a number of the Training Band musicians enthusiastically sang as the "Children's’ choir” in the exciting performances of A Pink Floyd Medley - at Nick Mason’s Open Day and for the Summer Concert. It was a new challenge for Training Band, and everyone rose to the occasion superbly. We will need a full-on membership drive for next year, so please watch this space for details of forthcoming Open Mornings and how we can all help to publicise the Association and grow the seeds of our future Bands. Thank you to everyone who has helped Training Band and CWA have such a fun 2014/15.” – Andy Titcomb, MD, Training Band Coming Events Saturday 29th August – Music Marathon Saturday 5th September - Gastard Fête, 1.30 for a 2.00pm start, finish by 4.00pm. Sunday 13th December – Christmas Concert. This will take place in the afternoon, not evening, details to be confirmed. Busking – details to be confirmed. The Gastard Fete is on the 5th of September and is for YCB with back up from Spectrum. The players need to be at the Coppershell Recreation ground in Gastard at 1.30pm for a 2pm start. The Band will play 20 minute sets (2 - 3 times during the Fete) and should be finished by 4pm. No uniform is required. I will send out confirmation and logistical details of each event nearer the time so keep an eye on your emails. Membership We are still trying to boost the membership of each band. Training band in particular needs new recruits as this is the entrance point for many. Please encourage friends and relatives to join, beginners to experienced players. If you know anyone who already plays or is interested in taking up playing a wind instrument, bring him/her along to a rehearsal. There is a cupboard full of instruments waiting to be played and we need stronger bass sections, especially in Spectrum. Remember, if you are moving up from Training to Spectrum Band or from Spectrum to YCB, we would expect you to overlap the transition by about a term. I know this means attending two rehearsals a week for a while but it ensures the move is smoother and it helps the two bands, especially the one you are leaving, to adjust. If you do move up you could consider taking up a second instrument in Training Band. Don’t forget that we offer theory lessons at the Pound on Saturday mornings, the times are below. If members wish to progress beyond ABRSM Grade 5 practical on their instruments, they must have passed the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory Exam. Subscriptions Subscriptions are going up for next year. As they have been the same for the last 10 years or so, it seems fair enough. From next term the subscription will be as below. It is now possible to pay your subs & instrument hire fees online. The banking information is: Account Number: 41394088 Sort code: 40 18 13 Please could you give your child's full name as part of the reference, so that we can tally money received and it would useful if you could email David directly when you have made/initiated the payment so he can check it has cleared, giving the reference you have used, what you are paying for (term subs/annual subs/instrument hire, for example “ this term’s subs and hire of a large instrument for Child A and subs for Child B”) and the total you have transferred.
