RULES OF PLAY
1.
We abide by the United States Bocce Federation rules but modified them slightly for
our league and space.
2.
Each team will be made up of 2 – 6 players. A bocce ball set consists of four red
balls, four green balls (or.. the balls of any given team must be of the same color and
differ sharply from those of the opposing team) and a small white ball called the
pallino. A “frame” consists of each team throwing their respective balls.
3.
Coin toss: the team that wins the toss throws out the pallino (the small white ball).
The coin toss winner will also determine the end from which the match will start. The
ball must go to the halfway point of the field and stay within the court boundaries.
After the pallino has been established that same team throws their first ball. After
that the opposing team throws their first ball. If their ball is closest to the pallino,
they stop throwing and let the other team throw. If it is not closer than they keep
throwing until it is closer or they have thrown their four balls. This format continues
until all eight balls have been thrown, at which time the frame is over.
4.
If the pallina is knocked out of play, the frame starts over. Each team must alternate
the player throwing the ball. After the first frame, the ball is thrown first by
whichever team scored in the previous frame.
5.
A game consists of multiple frames until one team has reached 16 points. The winner
must win by two points. For each frame we will switch sides of the court from which
to throw the balls.
6.
Balls can be measured at any time. One team member can cross the center line to
measure balls. Other players need to remain at their respective end of the court.
7.
During the regular season, teams may play with two, three or four players.
HOWEVER, FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH EACH TEAM MUST PLAY WITH FOUR
PLAYERS.
