SCG XI - Sydney Cricket Ground

SCG XI
The SCG XI was formed in 2007/08 following the amalgamation of the UTS
Balmain Cricket Club and Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust. The Balmain
Club was formed in 1897/98 and has a rich and proud history as one of the original
Grade cricket clubs and producer of First Class Cricketers. The Club’s most
famous player is Archie Jackson, who burst onto the international scene with Don
Bradman and was widely considered the future player of his generation (including
Bradman!) before dying at the age of 23 from tuberculosis. Another of Balmain’s
favourite sons is Greg Hayne, who retired in 2006/07 as the highest run scorer in
First Grade history with 12,354.
The SCG XI is open to all SCG Trust Members for membership and gives them the
opportunity to become involved with a Cricket Club to either play in, score, umpire
or simply volunteer. A number of games are scheduled for the remainder of the
2009/10, as seen below. Also, former NSW First Class and Australian players are
invited to become Honorary Members of the SCG XI. Today’s SCG XI captain,
Mark Atkinson, is the most capped First Class player in the Balmain Club’s history
and was recently welcomed as an Honorary Member, along with Steve Waugh,
Richie Benaud and Brett Lee.
Paddington District Cricket Club
The Paddington District Cricket Club was founded in 1893-94 as one of six
inaugural ‘electoral’ clubs in the Sydney Grade Cricket competition. It won 19
grade premierships, nine of them in First Grade.
At the end of the 1964-65 season Paddington amalgamated with the Glebe-South
Sydney DCC to form the Sydney Cricket Club which continued to compete in the
Sydney Grade Cricket competition.
In the 1965-66 carried the Paddington flag and ethos into the City and Suburban
Cricket Association. That ethos is to honour the traditions of the game whilst
providing the opportunity for its members to play competitive cricket within an
inclusive and social framework. The Paddington Club, now in its 117th year,
continues to play in the City and Suburban Cricket Association.
Paddington produced nine Australian representatives - AC Bannerman, JM
Gregory, HLST 'Stork' Hendry, JJ Kelly, AP Marr, CL McCool, AR Morris, MA
Noble and the legendary VT Trumper. The club also produced other high profile
players, including famous scribe and cricket commentator, JHW (Jack) Fingleton
who played 18 tests for Australia and, the voice of Australian cricket for almost 50
years, one AD (Alan) McGilvray MBE AM.
The Paddington District Cricket Club has a close affinity with the SCG. Not only
does the SCG lie within the original 'borough' of the Paddington Club but two of
Paddington's finest, Monty Noble and Victor Trumper, have been honoured by the
SCG Trust in naming grandstands after them.
The Sydney CC subsequently disbanded in the early 1990s. However, in 2007/8
the UTS-Balmain Club joined in partnership with the SCG Trust to form the Sydney
Cricket Club, adopting the name of the former grade club, and thereby also
adopting a piece of the Paddington Club's history.
