The College’s Athletics Program: A Report to the Faculty Senate A Winning Performance… • The co-ed sailing team captured another national title, its fourth. • Women’s volleyball (10 straight) and women’s tennis (five straight) won conference titles and made the NCAA Tournament. Volleyball beat #22 Miami (FL) in the first round last year, and Indiana University already this season. • Several others (men’s/women’s basketball, equestrian) earned post-season appearances. Setting Priorities… • Student-athletes (n~400) posted a 3.0-plus GPA for the sixth straight semester. • Unlike many NCAA Division I athletics programs…there is no “major clustering” at the College of Charleston. • Student-athletes are required to meet with major advisers before registration. • Academic Progress Rate/NCAA regulations Olympian Exploits… • At the London Olympics, sailor Juan Maegli finished ninth in laser class, and carried the Guatemalan flag, while Andrew Lawrence played in every game for the English basketball team. • College of Charleston studentathletes have become notable at the professional level, with Brett Gardner a starting outfielder for the NY Yankees, Michael Kohn a reliever for the LA Angels, and Andrew Goudelock a guard for the Los Angeles Lakers.
