The College’s Athletics Program:
A Report to the Faculty Senate
A Winning Performance…
• The co-ed sailing team captured another
national title, its fourth.
• Women’s volleyball (10 straight) and women’s
tennis (five straight) won conference titles and
made the NCAA Tournament. Volleyball beat
#22 Miami (FL) in the first round last year, and
Indiana University already this season.
• Several others (men’s/women’s basketball,
equestrian) earned post-season appearances.
Setting Priorities…
• Student-athletes (n~400) posted a 3.0-plus
GPA for the sixth straight semester.
• Unlike many NCAA Division I athletics
programs…there is no “major clustering” at
the College of Charleston.
• Student-athletes are required to meet with
major advisers before registration.
• Academic Progress Rate/NCAA regulations
Olympian Exploits…
• At the London Olympics, sailor
Juan Maegli finished ninth in
laser class, and carried the
Guatemalan flag, while Andrew
Lawrence played in every game
for the English basketball team.
• College of Charleston studentathletes have become notable
at the professional level, with
Brett Gardner a starting
outfielder for the NY Yankees,
Michael Kohn a reliever for the
LA Angels, and Andrew
Goudelock a guard for the Los
Angeles Lakers.
