The Penitentiary System of Republic of Moldova is a
subordinated department of Ministry of Justice that has under
its authority 17 penitentiary institutions.
The dynamic changes in the general number of detainees is
presented in the next slide that reflects the considerable
decrease of the inmate number.

The most important aspects that contribute to the decrease of
the inmate population are:
Individual detainee programs;
Psychological counseling;
General schooling and vocational training;
Cultural activities;
Sports activities;
In the following slides I will reflect the sports activities
practiced in the penitentiary institutions and the number of
detainees involved;

The way inmates practice sports activities
 Every
institution has gyms and sports fields
where inmates can practice sports
according to a schedule. The mane
problem is that the gyms and sports fields
are to small, to old, often having no
equipment.
 Only a few institutions have sufficient wide
fields and gyms for sports activities;

According to an annual schedule sports contests are
organized yearly between penitentiary institutions.
The contests include the following contests;
Table tennis
Power lifting
Chess
Volleyball
Indoor football
Why we do it?
 Sports
activities maintain the psychological
balance of detainees
 By practicing sports detainees have less time for
criminal activities
 Selection of inmates for sport contests
Sports impact




Sports as a tool for individual progress, developing of personal
potential and harmonious relations between inmates;
By promoting sports we encourage the inmates to promote a healthy
way of life, and increase their working capabilities;
The inmates that practice sports are less involved in criminal
activities in the penitentiary institutions;
Promoting fair-play in life;
Our problems
 Lack
of space in gyms and courts, there are to
small for common activities;
 Lack of equipment that does not allow practicing
professional sports;
 No motivation for practicing professional sports;
Our objectives
 Involving
a higher number of inmates in sports
activities;
 A more efficient collaboration with sports clubs;
 Investments for building new courts and gyms in
penitentiary institutions;
 Encouraging professional athletes;
 Promoting variety in sports activities;
