Calling all young union members – What’s your Next Play?
Dear Next Waver:
Are you a young OCSEA member who wants a voice in your union? Then I’m excited to invite
you to a mobilization and political action event just for young union members.
In 2011, public employees in Ohio and around the nation were blind-sided with one attack after
another. But despite these trick plays, activists like you carried the ball to victory by defeating
Senate Bill 5/Issue 2 at the voting booth. The bump-and-run tactics of anti-worker politicians
weren’t enough to take down the millions of Ohioans who stood behind collective bargaining.
Despite this victory, there’s been little time for end-zone dancing. The assaults continue, from
Right to Work initiatives, voter exclusion and unfair and biased legislative redistricting.
That’s why we need a game plan! Monday morning quarterbacking won’t cut it! It’s up to the
next generation of workers to develop the play-book – to fight for workers’ voices on the job
and to keep the game alive for generations to come.
Whether you’re a young OCSEA member who’s never been involved in the union or a leader
interested in growing your chapter’s Next Wave movement, I encourage you to attend the
AFSCME Next Wave Huddle-up and get the ball rolling!
The event will include tips on getting involved in the fight ahead and a chance to become a part
of the Next Wave movement. Happy hour bowling will be held on Friday evening before the event
so Next Wavers can network and get to know each another.
