MEDIA ADVISORY
The Last Ring Home, film about WWII Navy hero, airs nationally starting
Memorial Day, May 29
What:
The half-hour documentary film, The Last Ring Home, will air on public television stations
across the country on Memorial Day, with additional airings in the days that follow.
The film tells a story of courage, love and honor
centered on U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander
Minter Dial, a WWII hero and recipient of the
Navy Cross, the military’s second-highest
decoration awarded for valor in combat. The son
of a U.S. senator and married to an aspiring
actress, he became a Navy officer, captaining
the USS Napa at the outbreak of war. Captured
by the Japanese at Corregidor, Lt. Cmdr. Dial survived more than two years as a POW in the
Philippines, only to be killed in the most gruesome conditions in January 1945. Just before
dying, he handed his 1932 Naval Academy ring to a fellow prisoner hoping to have it returned
to his wife, but it was lost in the ensuing chaos. The ring reappears many years later under the
most improbable of circumstances. The Last Ring Home documents the ring's journey and the
impact that it has had on the lives of many people along the way. More information is
