Parents of Future Second Graders, The second grade team would like you to know how excited we are to meet each one of our students for next year. We are looking forward to a wonderful 2013-2014 school year! We are diligently working this summer to make your child’s second grade year as successful as possible. We need your help in this endeavor by working with your child throughout the summer on a few key concepts. This work will be vital to ensure a smooth transition into second grade. One of the major target areas in second grade is Math. Students coming into second grade should know their addition facts automatically. This means they can answer each addition fact within 3-5 seconds. We would like to give you some tools to practice math addition facts over the summer. Located on the second grade website, we have provided videos for each strategy that we use. These videos may be viewed by you and your child to review their math strategies. http://www.dentonisd.org/domain/6515 Please find attached a complete set of math addition flashcards. Each flashcard has been labeled with the strategy. Be sure to practice the answers and the strategies. Our suggestion is to cut out the flashcards and write the answer on the back lightly with pencil. The student may use the strategy clue to help them practice. Eventually, they should be able to fold their flashcard and know the answer without the clue. Thank you for your partnership, The Second Grade Team Ms. Flusche Mrs. Hauck Ms. Tutor Mrs. Stringfellow Mrs. Wilkinson Future Second Graders, When you cut out your flashcards and write the answers on the back, a good place to store them is in a Ziploc baggie. If you bring this baggie on the first day of school, your teacher will have a surprise for you! Study hard to be ready for second grade!
