What does HACRO do

Caring Dads
This is a programme to help abusive
fathers/partners deal with their behaviour and
improve the way they relate to their children.
What does HACRO do?
HACRO’S Objectives are:
Helping Avoid Crime
Caring for Offenders and Their Families
Improving the Prison Experience
Practical Support in Resettling Offenders
Influencing Criminal Justice Policy
To help us to achieve our objectives, we undertake a
variety of what we consider to be relevant and
informed initiatives which include:
Small Grants Resettlement grants for offenders
on community orders & on licence
Making Prison Visits Less Stressful
Services at HMP The Mount:
o Tea bar for visitors in the Visitors
centre
o Minibus to Hemel station for visitors
o Recruitment and screening of
volunteers to work at the prison
o Children’s play area in the visits hall.
o Coffee bar in the Visits Hall enabling
Barista
training
and
work
experience for prisoners (also in
place at HMP Bedford).
Leaving Prison Behind – a programme of
intensive project work experiences and
mentoring in the local community to support
prolific offenders in making the radical changes
to their lifestyle needed to become crime free.
Business Education
Working closely with the Education Centre at
HMP The Mount, we undertake one on one and
group studies in a Dragons Den style of
business education and mentoring for Offenders
seeking to set up their own businesses on
release.
We regularly contribute to debate on Criminal Justice
issues through our AGM, which is attended by civic
leaders, representatives of the police, judiciary,
probation and other criminal justice practitioners. The
AGM features national level speakers on themes such
as penal policy, restorative justice and offender
management.
We also publish an annual newsletter as well as the
Annual Report. They include information about
HACRO’s activities and personalities as well as
contributions of topical local interest. Information is
also available at www.hacro.org.uk.
HACRO Membership
HACRO welcomes the support of people from all
different backgrounds including those who may
have little or no experience of the criminal justice
field.
The Association is always seeking volunteers to
work with inmates at HMP The Mount in Bovingdon
and with offenders in the community. But equally
valuable is the support of well-wishers who may not
offer active involvement, but as subscribing members
give vital support to HACRO’s endeavours.
We are particularly seeking volunteers to work on
weekends and now some weekday afternoon sessions
at HMP The Mount in the Visits Hall Play Area and
the Visitors Centre. Other volunteer positions include
particular skills in administrative support (with
knowledge of current office software), pastoral work,
drugs rehabilitation, construction skills, farms &
gardens, sports training and some resettlement
activities.
Our proposed community projects also require
volunteers who are interested in giving practical and
positive support to ex-prisoners settling back into the
community, in order to deter them from a return to
crime; and volunteers who have interest / skills with
children and family work.
Assistance with the organisation of HACRO and
fundraising is also needed.
