When to Dribble and When to Pass
General Notes
This practice game works on the Technical and Psychological areas in
particular, developing the decision of whether to Dribble and or Pass
Aims & Objectives
When to Dribble and When to Pass.
Start with a game 3v3 or 6v6 with the theme used to help the children's
learning. Secondly, then break in to this practice game (see slide 1) and back to
the game to finish (see slide 2)
Rotate Roles!
Organisation & Setup
10v10 square. Blues try to dribble across the square defended by the Reds. If
they are successful they get a point. When any red wins the ball they try to
dribble outside the square and score in the goal. The Blue which loses the ball
becomes a support player to whom the other Blues can pass to. Reds can only
defend inside the square.
Coaching Factors & Outcomes
- Recognise When the opportunity is to Dribble or Pass
- Constant repetition of basic technique: Dribbling and Passing
- Recognise and exploit space while dribbling and also when receiving a pass
- Improve the child's perception (speed of thought)

Try to find best position that will help your teammate pass the
ball across the square

Adaptation & Progression
1. "Blues" starts with 2 footballs to increase opportunities for decision: Dribble
or Pass
2. Play 3v2 plus GK. Blues try to Dribble or Pass across the square to score. If
a red wins the ball inside the square they get try to pass to their own GK. The
ball is then given to the Blues again.
3. Play 3v3, 4v4 or 6v6 based on amount of children that attend
Technical
Passing - Different Surfaces of the foot
Dribbling - Different Surfaces of the foot
Receiving - Surfaces of the foot / No touch turn

Try to make a decision before you receive the ball 'Will I or Can I
Dribble or Pass' to get the ball across the square
