with Exclusive Projects
Istanbul, 28 March 2017: Founded in 1892, Pera Palace Hotel Jumeirah, the pearl of
Istanbul, celebrates its 125th year with a series of projects and exclusive events. Since
December 2016, the hotel opened a new pop up restaurant called Belle Epoque a Pasha to
present its 125th year degustation menu where you will feel yourself as a part of the
mysterious history of Pera. Together with chef Orhan Demirok, Executive Chef Arif Kemal
Doğan created an exclusive menu by modernising the dishes of the old menus from 20s and
30s. The menu which consists of hors d'oeuvres variés, bouchée à la reine, Citrus sorbet, beef
bourguignon and Manjari bitter chocolate soufflé, will take you to the timeless history and
glamour of Pera.
As one of the most significant symbols of Pera district with art & culture events, Pera Palace
Hotel Jumeirah also organized an exclusive contemporary art exhibition between 15-19 March
named “Decadence” to celebrate the 125 th year of the hotel together with DAS Art Project., an
art initiative which aims to work with independent artists, to organize exhibitions not in a set
place but in places throughout Istanbul and Turkey that are historically important and iconic,
yet have become derelict; with the purpose of reutilizing these buildings that held different
functions through time, as art venues; while not altering the building itself, and preparing
short-term exhibitions with the themes that will compliment the building and its state.
Pera Palace Hotel Jumeirah has been home to many talented and legendary musicians
throughout its history since 1892. Paul Lange, who is the first orchestra conductor in the
Ottoman Empire era under the protection of Sultan Abdulhamid II, performed in Grand Pera
Ballroom with various orchestras. Hungarian violinst Leopold Auer, to whom Pyotr Ilyich
Tchaikovsky had dedicated one of his violin concerto, stayed in Pera Palace in 1902 during his
visit to perform in Yıldız Palace where the Sultan lived. Sir Edward Elgar, whose compositions
entered both the British and international classical concert repertoires, also visited Pera Palace
and mentioned about his stay in the hotel in his diary. In 1935, timeless Russian composer and
pianist Dmitri Shostakovich, stayed in Pera Palace and bought his notes paper for his
“Leningrad Symphony” from a store in Karaköy, a very close neighborhood to the hotel. Pera
Palace Hotel Jumeirah continues to host Saturday Morning Concerts, once organized by the
AKM Concert Hall and a traditional favourite of Istanbul's classical music lovers, with the
contribution of IDEA Müzik at the Grand Pera Ballroom which has witnessed countless great
nights of music in its long and colorful history.
On 15 April 2017, with the moderation of music historian and composer Dr. Emre Aracı, violin
virtuoso Cihat Aşkın and pianist Cana Gürmen will perform an exclusive selection of the
classics which have direct connection to the sumptuous history of Pera Palace such as Sir
Edward Elgar, Leopold Auer, Paul Lange and Dmitri Shostakovich.
The concert starts at 11:00 a.m. and the tickets are available at www.biletix.com.
Having hosted numerous theatre plays in its history, Pera Palace Hotel Jumeirah joined forces
with a local theatre company Kumbaraci50 to offer a unique experience to art lovers. The hotel
turned into a stage for the interactive play called “The Time of Pera”. Theatregoers will embark
upon a journey through time in rooms bearing the names of iconic guests such Agatha
Christie, Greta Garbo, Ernest Hemingway and Franz Joseph, as well as the Grand Pera
Ballroom. The theatre play will be continuing during 2017.
