Task:
……. promote and encourage more people to become involved in leading sports and physical
activities. Ensure you include the following:-
1.
The attributes of sports leadership that can be split into three main aspects: skills, qualities and
responsibilities.
Describe:
a. the skills that are needed to be a successful sports leader
(P1a)
The skills that are needed to be successful sports leader are being able to know the basics of the sport
you are teaching. How to structure the activities session that you are planning, so the children are
organised and are always on task but also enjoying themselves. You have to have good
communication skills so that whoever your teaching understands what you are saying.
b. the qualities that a sports leader should have
(P1b)
The qualities that a sports leader should have are, make sure you use different leadership sports so it’s
not the same boring games otherwise the audience you teach will get bored and not listen. You have to
be motivated and enthusiastic to teach any audience otherwise they can get very bored and they won’t
enjoy what you are teaching because it doesn’t seem like the teacher can be bothered to teach the
lesson.
,
c. the areas/procedures that a sports leader is responsible for
(P1c)
The areas that a sports leader are responsible for; they have to make sure that the audience they are
teaching are protected especially if they are teaching little children who are vulnerable. Also making
sure you have the correct insurance in case someone gets injured. Rules and regulations have to be in
place so you can set everything up.
2.
Now that you have identified what makes a successful Sports Leader, name several sports
leaders that demonstrate these aspects well.
I would say that dame Kelly Holmes is a very good sports leader she has all the quality, which
makes a sports leader. Such as confidence, good communication. Another successful sports
leader would be David beck ham was a very good captain for England and he is a very good role
model, he has very good confidence and he is very good at teacher younger children.

In order to achieve a MERIT grade, in addition to the requirements for a Pass you need to:
1.
Now go back to your ‘PASS’ answers and Explain the three main
aspects associated with successful sports leadership:
a)
the skills that are needed and suggest why they are
necessary
1a) one skill that is needed is to be a good communicator in sports leaderships.
This is needed to because you need to be able to motivate your team by having a
team talk. Throughout the game when being a good sports leader you need to be
able to help and give guidance or instructions on how to be successful. 1b) another important skill that is needed
is to be knowledgeable about the sport that you have chosen to play and teach. This is important because
players will respect what you are teaching them and talking about
because you will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of the game. 1c)
another good skill that a good sports leader needs is be able to work with
your ability and not make sure that they don’t make the sport you are
doing to easy or too hard because this isn’t a very good sports leader and
some young adult may struggle with sports.
b)
The qualities that a sports leader should have and
why these are important
1a) one quality that a sports leader should have is confidence because they need to be able to talk
out loud to a lot of mixed ages and be confident in what they are saying so the people they are
talking to feel like they can be confident too. 1b) Another quality that makes a good sports leader is
having a good relationship with all that he/she teaches so that they get on and enjoy the sport they
are being teached, because this will help them work will all types of abilities if they are good at
having good relationships with the people who they are teaching and they will also respect each
other. 1c) one last good pointer for good qualities on a sports leader is that they treat everyone
equally and respect each other correctly because then
whoever they are working with will treat them with as much
respect but if the leader didn’t treat the person equally then
who they are working with won’t treat them with very good
respect.
Areas/procedures that a sports leader is responsible for
and gives reasons why he/she should be
responsible for these aspects of leadership:
1a) Responsibilities one responsibility of a good sports leader
is to make sure that the health and safety rules are followed to a high standard as they are very
important. If everyone is safe then a lesson will go with the flow. 1b) Also an important
responsibility is to make sure all the equipment is in the right place and used safety so all is well.
This is important because it shows good leadership skills and shows that the coach is taking
charge of the lesson. 1c) the sports leader also has a responsibility of making sure everyone is ok
and happy with that they are doing because then the students will feel more confident and it ease
with their sports leader and it helps the students to learn and interact more with the lesson.
Task Three (Merit)(M1d) Add pictures to support your answers
Name two successful Sports leaders
You need to list the aspects of their skills, qualities and responsibilities which are different. For example, it
may be they have different leadership styles, communicate with others differently or share different values.
You will need to add pictures of the two leaders it may be helpful to put the information in a table which will
help you to compare the two leaders successfully.
An Example is shown Below
KNOWLEDGE
COACH CARTER
MR SUGDEN
E.g. Coach Carter was teaching basketball which
he knew a lot about from his previous playing
experience he showed during his coaching
sessions that he could demonstrate parts of the
game.
e.gMr Sugden claimed to know a lot about
football but didn’t actually teach the group
anything as he played a big game in which he
took part. He also was biased as when he missed
a penalty he made up a rule to retake it! Not
good knowledge.
Coach carter had good leadership skills but
somewhere not so good because he was too
forceful especially when he was sorting out the
child and he pushed up against the wall. He
had good motivation skills even if he was
shouting it makes the people carry on and
become more confident. He also was good
when he said’ I can make you winners’ if you
just try and listen to me. Also when he gave
them respect when he was calling them sir, this
is good because this normally means that they
give you respect back which is a really good
quality of a sports leader. He had no time for
anyone messing around , which is good because
people that mess around ruin the sport you are
playing so this is a another good quality of a
sports leader. He seems very experienced in
sports area as he knows what sort of training to
do in basketball shown in the short clip that we
watch when he told them to do suicide across
the court for a whole hour.
Mr Sugden wasn’t a very good sports leader
because he claimed he knew too much about
the sport and when he did he came across as
rather cocky which a good sports leader
shouldn’t do, because this could make the
people they are teaching feel really
uncomfortable in the lesson. He didn’t use his
knowledge that he said he had to teach any of
the boys he just told them to play a game of
football and then he took part in the game. He
also made all the boys feel really uncomfortable
because he hit them and pushed them when
they was in the way so this is classed as not a
very good sports leader because you are not
allowed to push students over. He also made up
rules as he went along in the game, for example
when he missed the penalty and then he made
up a rule saying that he could retake it when he
should have known that he can’t if he knew the
sport well enough, this shows poor knowledge
of the sport making him a bad sports leader.
Skills
 Knowledge about the sport
 Organising
 Experience
Qualities
 Motivating
 Positive attitude
 Discipline
Responsibilities
 Health and safety
 Follow rules and regulations
Skills

It is difficult to see what skills
and qualities Mr Sugden has
because in the video clip we
watched he seemed pretty
much making the rules up on
the spot and didn’t have many
good skills a leader needs.

Mr sugden doesn’t have any
good qualities such as
motivating or positive attitude
because in the video clip he just
shouted at them all telling them
what to do which he shouldn’t
shout because it makes them
feel uncomfortable.
Qualities
Responsibilities
 Health and safety
 Follow rules and regulations

In order to achieve a DISTINCTION grade, in addition to the requirements for a Pass and Merit
you need to:
1.
Name and evaluate the skills and qualities of contrasting leaders in sport. You will need to make
judgements on the positives and negatives of their differing skills and qualities and also comment
on the effectiveness of these in making them successful leaders or not.
(D1a)
COMPLETE BELOW
David beck ham is a very good leader, he has very good skills. He knows the basics
knowledge of the sport. David beck ham is very good at structuring lessons so that the
people he would be teaching would be organised and know what they have to do. He has
very good communication skills, this will make it easier for whoever he is teaching to
understand and listen. David beck ham has many qualities he is very enthuastic and will
motivate whoever he is teaching to help them find the confidence and enjoy the sports he is
teaching them his famous sport would be football. So if he was teaching football he would
have to be very fair with the rules and regulations when playing football. This makes David
beck ham a very good leader for sport.
Fabio Capello isn’t a very good leader compared to David beck ham he doesn’t have very
good communication skills for example when he was the manager of the England team he
was Italian and this was not successful because of the lack of fluent English. One thing that’s
good about Capello is that he did have some experience with playing football games. He
played over 300 games for AC Milan. Also he can speak English, Italian and Spanish. But
compared to David beck ham he isn’t very good because he doesn’t give people a chance to
speak and give their opinion. He doesn’t have many qualities apart from that he is
enthuastic and motivating but he can get quite aggressive at time because people don’t
understand him.
Overall I think that David beckham is a better leader because he has better qualities and
skills than Fabio Capello.
