1. The following equations involve different quantities and use different operations, yet
produce the same result. Use a place value mat and words to explain why this is true.
.524 x 103 = 524
52,400 ÷ 102 = 524
2. A Madagascar Hissing Cockroach measures 8 cm.
a. Express this measurement in meters.
8 ÷ 102 = 0.08 meters
b. Explain your thinking using a place value chart.
C, Explain your thinking using an equation that includes an exponent.
8cm = ____________meters
8 ÷ 102 = 0.08 meters (There are 100 cm in 1 meter. If I divide 8 by 100,
which is 102, then I shift the number 2 spaces right on the place value
chart and I get 0.08 meters)
Compare the following numbers:
3. 4 tenths + 24 hundredths
4. 3 + 8 x (

b. 61 x 10 + 2 x 0.1 + 5 x 0.01

7. Dr. West mixed 2. 573 g of chemical A, 10.427 g of chemical B, and 7.38 g of chemical C to
make 4 doses of medicine.
a. About how much medicine did she make in grams? Estimate the amount of each
chemical by rounding to the nearest tenth of a gram before finding the sum. Show
your thinking.
2.573 rounds to 2.6 because 57 hundredths is closer to 60 hundredths which is 6 tenths.
10.427 rounds to 10.4 because 42 hundredths is closer to 40 hundredths which is 4
tenths. 7.38 rounds to 7.4 because 38 hundredths is closer to 40 hundredths which is 4
tenths. When I add 2.6 + 10.4 + 7.4 it equals 20.4. She made 20.4 grams of medicine
b. Find the actual amount of medicine mixed by Dr. West.
Actual amount: 2.573 + 10.427 + 7.38 = 20.380
c. What is the difference in your estimate and the actual amount? Difference in estimated
and actual: 20.4 – 20.380 = 0.020 grams
d. About how many grams are in one dose of medicine? Explain your strategy for solving
this problem. I took the actual amount of 20.380 grams and estimated it to 20. I then
divided 20 by 4. This gave me about 5 grams per dose.

9. Round 346.843 to the nearest tenth, hundredth and whole number.
Tenth: 346.8
Hundredth: 346.84
Whole Number: 347
10. 0.8 + 0.4 =1.2
11. 2.05 + 0.08 = 2.13
12. 80.9 – 3.451 =77.449
13. 81.43 – 0.002 = 81.428
14. Use an area model to show the product of 2.12 and 5.
15. Mrs. Haskel mixes 1.5 liters of red paint with 4 times as much white paint to make pink
paint. She pours the pink paint equally into 3 containers. How much pink paint is in each
containers?
1.5 x 4 = 6.0
6.0 + 1.5 + 7.5 liters of paint
7.5 ÷ 3 = 2.5 liters of paint per container
