CAROL MCGOVERN, RSM MEMORIAL AWARD In 1996, the Board of Directors of the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless established an award to be given to a person who exemplifies the spirit and work of our past President, Sr. Carol McGovern with involvement in advocating to fight homelessness, providing services, and empowering those who are homeless. Criteria: At least five years involvement in fighting for an end to homelessness in RI; Extensive depth and breadth of service through direct interventions with homeless individuals and advocacy for social change; and, Commitment to the empowerment of those who are poor and homeless. SENATOR JACK REED ADVOCACY AWARD The Senator Jack Reed Advocacy Award is a permanent award to honor the Senator for his national leadership on affordable housing and homelessness. We believe that by establishing this award, we are acknowledging the Senator with a meaningful and welldeserved demonstration of our gratitude for his work. Criteria: A policy maker or someone that influences policy and is committed to ending homelessness; Clearly exercises leadership and public advocacy for housing resources; and, Has made a direct contribution to the further the work of the RI Coalition for the Homeless. THE SR. JUDY SOARES, RSM AND JOHN COEN MEMORIAL AWARD FOR DIRECT SERVICE The Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless continues to offer a permanent award in honor of our late colleagues, Sr. Judy Soares and John Coen. Through these wonderful role models of direct service, we wish to honor a member agency staff person that demonstrates a commitment and concern for those who are homeless. Criteria: Work with those who are homeless for at least five years; Demonstrated extraordinary dedication to his or her work; Consistent sensitivity to and respect for those who are homeless; Evidence of effectiveness in serving homeless constituents; and, Demonstrated commitment beyond service to engage in advocacy on housing and homeless issues.
