Entry Procedure:
Entry is open to all eligible students at BUCS institutions. Online Entries via the BUCScore system
ratified by an Institution’s Athletic Union/Sports Office must be submitted by Thursday 25 February
2016.
Pre-event Information:
Detailed instructions regarding the Snooker Championships will be issued in the BUCS Essentials on 1
and 8 March 2016.
Contact:
Competitors should first contact their university AU Office with any queries. AUs with general issues
can contact Emma Trunks ([email protected]) for further information. For snooker-specific
issues, please contact Jamie Thompson ([email protected]).
Eligibility:
These Championships are open to students at BUCS member institutions, who meet the BUCS
Eligibility Regulations (Reg 7). All competitors MUST produce a VALID UNIVERSITY ID CARD when
registering at the event.
Entries:
Institutions may enter up to three teams. Entry cannot be guaranteed to all teams. A team comprises
five players, male or female. Up to two students from an institution that does not enter a team may enter
on an individual basis. Substitutions can be made before play begins but only from those named on the
reserve list. Changes made to entries after the closing date will be subject to a fine.
Entry Fees:
Entry fee is £108.50 per team, which includes entry into an individual event for up to five players named
on any one team. The fee for students entering individually is £14.25 per person.
Entry Process:
BUCS are operating online entries for this event via BUCScore. This is an automated system which will
require your Athletic Union/Sports Office to submit your entry. The online forms will be live from 1
December 2015 and will close automatically at midnight on 25 February 2016. The online forms will
need to be completed in full – incomplete forms cannot be submitted. No late entries can be accepted
via this system.
Closing Date:
Online Entry Forms will automatically close at midnight on 25 February 2016. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL
BE ACCEPTED.
Awards:
Medals will be awarded to the first four students in each individual event and the first four teams in the
team events (excluding the Plate). BUCS Points will be awarded to the top four places in individual
events and top eight places in team events.
Format:
Team Events:
Championship/Trophy Qualifying (“Main Draw”): 20 Teams
Team Shield: no limit. However, as a maximum of 24 teams may compete at Finals, regional play-offs
may be required before Finals.
Team Plate: for teams that are eliminated after the first round in the Team Shield.
The “Main Draw” consists of four groups of five teams, drawn randomly in batches of four according to
current ranking position. The best two first teams in each group will qualify for the Championship
quarter-finals and the next teams that don’t qualify for the Championship will enter the Trophy quarterfinals. The bottom team in each group will be eliminated and relegated to the Shield for 2016-17.
All group matches consist of ten frames (five "rubbers" of two frames), so that all five players must
participate, and at least 6 frames are needed to win a match. All frames are played. A team winning a
match is awarded 2 points; a draw results in 1 point each.
Shield: the following rules apply. If the event consists of 12 or 16 teams, then matches are as for the
Main Draw. If it consists of 20 to 24 teams, then there will be four groups of five/six teams, drawn
randomly in batches of four according to current ranking position. Each match will consist of one frame
per player, so that three are needed to win a match. All frames are played. A team winning a match is
awarded 2 points. Players’ names must be listed in the playing order submitted via BUCScore. This
order will be fixed for teams in the group stages only.
The best two teams in each Shield group will qualify for the quarter-finals. Teams reaching the semifinals will be promoted to Championship/Trophy level for 2016-17.
The knock-out stages of the Championship, Trophy and Shield are the best of ten frames – play stops
when a team reaches six frames. A 5-5 tie is resolved by a single-frame play-off. In the final, however,
each player plays their opposite number over the best of three frames. The final is thus won by winning
three of the matches played.
Plate is an open-draw knock-out event, with one frame per player until the final where each player plays
two frames and six are needed for a team win. A perpetual cup and medals will be awarded to the
winners.
Individual Events:
Individual Championship: First Team and unattached players only
Individual Trophy: Second/Third Team players only
Both events are knock-out competitions. While it is not compulsory to enter these events, players are
encouraged to do so. Names of players are entered automatically via BUCScore, so that the draw for
both the Individual and Team events can be made in advance.
As the Individual Championship may be limited in size, entry cannot be guaranteed to all students from
any institution. Therefore, players’ names must be listed on the entry form in order of preference. The
Individual Championship is the best of three frames until the final, which is the best of five frames. Either
eight or sixteen players, to be decided by the Snooker SAG, may be seeded for the Individual
Championship. In the Individual Trophy, all matches are the best of three frames.
Timetable:
The final timetable will be drawn up once entries have been received. This will be circulated with the
Pre-event Information, prior to the Championships.
Pre-event Information:
Pre-event Information will be sent to Athletic Unions/Sports Offices via the BUCS Essentials on Tuesday
1 and 8 March 2016. It will also be posted on the Snooker pages at www.bucs.org.uk. It is your
responsibility to check that the names entered in the event are correct and notify BUCS of any errors.
