Intramurals
3-on-3 Basketball League
RULES OF PLAY
National Federation High School Rules govern all play.
THE GAME
1. Teams consist of three (3) players with unlimited substitutions for each team. All games must begin and end
with at least (2) players.
2. The game is played to 25 points, win by two. Cap for the game will be 30.
3. A standard field goal is worth one (1) point; two (2) points will be awarded for baskets made from behind the
“take back” or three-point line (19’9”).
4. There is one (60-second) timeout per game, per team. The clock will also stop in the event of an injury.
5. Games will be enforced with a 25-minute time limit. In the event of a tie at the end of 25 minutes, the game will
be over [PLAYOFFS ONLY: Sudden death (re-do Captain’s Meeting and possession). First basket scored wins the
game].
6. Possession after a made basket will be loser's outs (no “make it, take it”).
POSSESSION AND “CHECKING THE BALL”
1. A coin toss will determine first possession. The alternate possession rule will be in effect after the coin toss.
2. The ball must be taken back behind the “take back” line on each change of possession. The "take back" line will
be the 3-point arc. Change of possession includes a defensive rebound, made basket, “air ball” recovered by the
defensive team, a turnover or a stolen ball by the defensive team.
3. 'Taking back' means the ball-handlers feet and the ball must be behind the check line. Failure to do this will
result in loss of possession and no points awarded if a basket is scored.
4. The ball must be checked by the opposing team at the top of the key after a made basket or a dead ball
situation.
5. The ball must be passed in after it has been checked by the opposing team. (First violation = Warning; Second =
turnover).
FOULS AND VIOLATIONS
1. An Intramural Official will be present on all courts to verify score and communicate infractions.
2. If a player is fouled while shooting and makes the basket, the basket will count and the player will shoot a 1point free throw. Make or miss, possession alternates.
3. If a player is fouled while shooting and misses the basket, the offensive team will maintain possession of the
ball.
4. A team Captain may ask the court monitor to settle disputes, whether it be “trash talk”, sketchy calls, unruly
fans or rough play. The court monitor’s decision is final.
5. Shooting fouls will be handled in the following manner (on or after the 5th team foul). When the basket is made,
count the basket. When the basket is missed and the free throw is made, possession goes to the defensive
team. If the free throw is missed, the offensive team retains possession.
6. Free Throw Option: In any free throw situations, (excluding technical, intentional and flagrant fouls), the
designated shooter may at his or her option choose to shoot from the free-throw line for one (1) point, OR from
behind the three-point line for 2 points. In either case, the player shooting must have both feet completely
behind the line when initiating the attempt. Possession will alternate regardless if shot is made or missed
(exception: technical, intentional or flagrant fouls).
7. Technical, Intentional and Flagrant Fouls: Non-offending team will select a player on the court to shoot a 1-point
free throw. Make or miss, non-offending team maintains possession.
FINAL THIRTY (30) SECONDS
The clock will stop on every whistle in the final thirty (30) seconds. Clock will begin once possession is gained in-bounds
off the entry/first pass.
TEAM CONDUCT
1. Any player/team may be removed from the game or tournament at the discretion of the court monitor for
abusive behavior, flagrant fouls or rough play.
2. Any player involved in fighting or continuous misconduct during the game (including abusive behavior toward
the court monitor) must meet with the Coordinator of Intramural Sports.
