FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE Q: Who Can Play? A: This program is open to boys and girls ages 5-12 (as of September 1st ). Q: How are Individual Players placed on Teams? A: This is strictly a random process. Skill level is not factored when creating teams. If your child requests to be placed on a friend's team it will be our goal to accommodate this request. Teams are formed by age divisions as follows: 5-6 year olds - Boys and Girls 7-8 year olds – Boys and Girls 9-10 year olds – Boys and Girls 11-12 year olds – Boys and Girls Most teams will have 8 - 10 players. We will try to accommodate requests where we can, but we follow this procedure when forming teams to try to be as fair as possible to each player. This is a recreational league. The focus for the teams is to learn, understand and improve skills, and to build camaraderie. Q: Do you accept Team Registrations? A: Yes but we reserve the right to defer to the above procedure as needed. Q: How many teams can one school have? A: It depends. We will not turn players away. As many teams that can be formed from each school by grade/age division will be accepted. Everybody who wants to play is welcome. Q: How many players are on a team? A: Most teams have 8 - 10 players. However, we do reserve the right to stretch these guidelines if the league deems necessary. Q: Does the League supply Uniforms? A: Every player will receive a team jersey. Q: Who are the Officials and are they qualified? A: These are SFYA certified individuals and have been given the necessary training to call a fair game for both sides. They are not professional NBA officials and mistakes and miscalls are part of the game. It is OK to disagree with their calls but it is not acceptable to disparage. Q: How much playing time can my child expect? A: All of our programs promote participation, fun, and fundamentals. Coaches are required to fairly allocate playing time equally amongst all players on the team. We will do our best to assure all players receive equal playing time. Q: What do I get for my Registration Fee? A: A skills training session the first week, a seven-game season including practices and Championship Sunday the last week, SFYAcertified officials, team jersey, interactive website, organized administration, and a lot of FUN for you and your child! Q: Are there playoffs? A: No. This is a recreation league that is designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball. The outcome of each game is irrelevant. The concept is what is important. However, as part of the last scheduled game for the current season we will provide a Championship Sunday atmosphere which you and your child will enjoy. Q: What types of awards are given? A: Each player will receive an individual participation trophy. Also, each week of the season, we will have a “PLAYER of the WEEK” for each division for the player that has demonstrated good sportsmanship and teamwork. That player will receive a medal and be featured on the SFYA website. Q: Do all basketball players need mouth pieces? A: It is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY that all players are wearing a mouth piece before stepping on the court. Players that do not have a mouth piece will not be permitted to play. Q: How do I register?
