INTRODUCTION
For all our non-professional (amateur) coaches - on how to prepare their teams to win?
The big difference between an amateur and professional coach is the limited time the amateur coach has to prepare his
team. The amateur coach has between two and three training sessions per week, where the professional coach has at least
eight sessions available. The result of this is that it is very important for the amateur coach to know how to prepare his team in
the limited time available and it always boils down to the one question - What is important and for how long?
In this practical guide, our coaches will discover just how to do that! Our coaches will find six simple steps on how to
improve their coaching sessions, regardless on what level they are coaching. I know that these steps work, because we have
been using them with great success over the last few years.
Our coaches’ journey to become winning coaches starts with these six steps:
• Step 1 - Get your players match fit.
• Step 2 - Develop your players’ essential rugby skills.
• Step 3 - Develop your players’ ball winning skills.
• Step 4 - Develop your team’s scoring abilities.
• Step 5 - Develop a well structured defensive system.
• Step 6 - Practice to win!
In each of these areas I shall give our coaches information, practical suggestions and simple choices that will help them to
manage their coaching sessions better.
I also hope that the contents of this guide will keep our amateur coaches enthusiastic and positive in their coaching
abilities - not for a day, or a week, but for the rest of their coaching careers.
Remember, we all coach rugby, because we love the game.

Part 1
Get your players match fit
Phase 1: Pre-season Fitness programme: A second period of 3 to 5 weeks
The initial period is followed by a three to five week period in which the fitness activities must grow in intensity and for this I mainly use
rugby related stamina drills. For me the players get fit more quickly with stamina drills, because of the intensity of the drills and the
concentration and communication players need to succeed, and as a added bonus, they are becoming more skillful.
I recommend the following very important drills for this period:

STATION 1
Get your players match fit

“SHUTTLE RUNS” STATION
The continuous tackle stamina drill
Equipment:
1) 4 tackle bags per drill.
2) 2 Rugby balls per drill

Exercise / Drill explanation:
1) The first player runs to the first bag, puts the ball down
in front of the tackle bag and then tackles the bag.
2) The second player, holding the bag, then picks the ball
up, runs to the opposite tackle bag, puts the ball down
and tackles the bag.
3) The third player, holding the second bag, then picks
the ball up to continue the drill.
Coaching Points:
Setting out and running lines of the drill
1) The players must pick up the ball and put it down to get
in the correct low body position for the tackle.

1) Are the moves practical and easy to use, i.e. are the moves user friendly?.
2) Are the moves designed to beat modern rugby defenses ?
3) Are the moves successful, i.e. do the moves work?.

Gregan “X” pass move

Description of the Move:
The scrum-half breaks away from the ruck
and then gives a “X-pass” or switch pass to
the forward runner running straight in the first
channel.

Coaching Notes:
1) This move can be executed
on both sides of the ruck.
Advantage of the move:
This move is designed to draw the first
defender out of his position next to the ruck
when he follows the running scrum-half, which
then creates a gap for the forward runner to run
into.

Part 5
Develop a well structured defensive system
“The new defensive line drill”
Description of the drill:
1)
Two lines of players stand on AB and CD, with two
opposing players working together.
2)
On the signal of the coach the two lines shoot forward
and clap hands at line 1-1, while trying to keep their
lines as straight as possible. After clapping hands the
players fall back, also in a straight line, still facing
each other.
3)
The following moves can be incorporated in the drill to
disorientate the players before they fall back:- The players run around each other and then back to
their original starting line.
- The players run around each other and then to the
opposite starting line.
Setting out and running lines of the drill
Advantage of the drill:
A defensive drill that teaches players on how to keep their
defensive line straight, especially when they move forward
for the tackle and fall back on the reload.
