1. Indian mountaineer creates history by scaling Mt Everest for
the fourth time
Indian mountaineer from Arunachal Pradesh, Anshu Jamsenpa, created history on
16 May 2017 by becoming the first Indian woman to scale the world’s highest
peak, Mount Everest for the fourth time during her lifetime. She unfurled the
country’s flag again on the peak on May 21 2017, just days after doing the same
thing. Her dual climb was completed in 118 hours and 15 minutes. It marks the
fastest double effort by a woman.

2. ISRO to improve India’s communication system by launching
5 satellites
ISRO is going to launch five communication satellites by the end of 2017 to
improve the communication system in India. The Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) is going to launch five communication satellites by the end of
2017. The same was confirmed by the organisation’s chairman, A S Kiran Kumar
on 27 April 2017.
3. Shah Rukh Khan becomes first Indian actor to deliver Ted
Talk
Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, on 27 April 2017, became the first Indian actor
to deliver TED speech in Vancouver, Canada. He spoke out on various issues
beginning from his stardom to the changes world has experienced with the
introduction of the internet.

4. Geetha Johri takes over as first woman head of Gujarat’s
police force
Geetha Johri, a 1982-batch IPS officer was appointed as the Director General of
Police of Gujarat on 4 April, 2017. With this move, she has become the first
woman to head the Gujarat’s police force.

5. Manipur govt to hold People’s Day on 15th of every month
The new BJP-led government in Manipur state has decided to hold People’s Day
on the 15th of every month. The announcement was made by the state’s Chief
Minister, N Biren Singh during a function held in Khwairamband Bazar in Imphal
on 9 April 2017.
6. 126th Birth Anniversary of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar observed
nationwide
The 126th anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar, also known as
Ambedkar Jayanti, was observed in India on 14 April 2017. Dr. Ambedkar was
known as the father and architect of the Indian Constitution. On this occasion,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he is committed to building an inclusive
India “of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s dreams.”

1. International Jazz Day 2017 observed across the world
The International Jazz Day 2017 was observed across the world on 30 April 2017
with an aim to raise awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz
as an educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced
cooperation among people.
2. World Immunization Week 2017 observed with theme
#VaccinesWork
World Immunization Week 2017 was observed across the globe between 24 April
and 30 April 2017. The theme for the 2017 World Immunization Week was
‘VaccinesWork.’ The theme aimed to raise awareness about the critical
importance of full immunization throughout life, and its role in achieving the 2030
Sustainable Development Goals.
3. UNESCO to screen this Indian short film during World Press
Freedom Day celebrations
The theme for the 2017 World Press Freedom Day was “Critical Minds for Critical
Times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies“. The
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
screened the short film ‘Azaad’ as a part of the World Press Freedom Day
celebrations. The event, which celebrated the principle of freedom of press, took
place in Jakarta from 1 May -4 May 2017.
4. UAE's first solar-powered gas station opens in Dubai
The Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) on 26 April 2017 opened United
Arab Emirates’ first solar-powered gas station. The ENOC stated that the country’s
first solar-powered gas station signifies country’s increased focus on maintaining
the highest standards of sustainability and clean energy.
5. Malala to become the youngest United Nations Messenger of
Peace
The youngest Nobel Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai was appointed as the
youngest United Nations Messenger of Peace on 10 April 2017. Her new
role will include helping in the promotion of girl’s education across the
world.

6. UN to celebrate International Yoga Day with special memorial
stamps
The United Nations Postal Administration issued special stamps with the
images of the sacred Indian sound ‘Om’ and of 10 yoga asanas(poses) to
celebrate the International Yoga Day this year. The day is celebrated across the
world on 21 June since its inception in 2015.

1. Veteran NASA spacewoman to spend three more months in orbit
World's oldest and most experienced spacewoman ‘Peggy Whitson’ will be given
three extra months in orbit. Peggy Whitson will remain on the International Space
Station until September 2017. The 57-year-old astronaut reached space in
November 2016 and was supposed to return to Earth in June 2017. However, as
per agreement between NASA and the Russian Space Agency, she will stay
another three months and take advantage of an empty seat on a Soyuz capsule in
the fall. Scientists are eager to monitor any changes to her body.
2. Cisco launched 5th global cyber range lab in Gurugram on April
12,2017
US-based tech giant Cisco launched its fifth global cyber range lab in Gurugram
with an aim to train Indian firms and government agencies on real—world cyberattacks. Cisco has four other such labs in Australia. The facility was inaugurated by
National Cyber Security Coordinator Gulshan Rai. Cisco will also launch a
Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Pune which will be its fourth such centre
after the US, Poland and Japan.
3. NASA detects Signs of Water in a distant Neptune Sized Planet
May 12, 2017
Scientists have detected “a strong water signature” in the atmosphere of a distant
Neptune-sized planet called HAT-P-26b. The study conducted using NASA’s
Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes has showed that HAT-P-26b has a primitive
atmosphere composed almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. Although the planet
is not a water world, its atmosphere which is relatively clear of clouds has a strong
water signature
4. Scientists find Second Great Spot on Jupiter April 11,2017
Scientists have found a second "Great Spot" in Jupiter, which is far colder and
higher than the original, Great Red Spot. The new spot has been named "Great
Cold Spot" and spans 24,000 kilometres across and 12,000 kilometres wide. The
newly discovered weather system is continually changing in shape and size: it is
formed by the energy from Jupiter's polar auroras. A team led by University of
Leicester's Tom Stallard used a telescope in Chile to chart the temperature and
density of Jupiter's atmosphere.
5. ISRO SAARC Satellite launched by India
The South Asia Satellite, also known as GSAT-9, is a geosynchronous
communications and meteorology satellite operated by the Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) for the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation
(SAARC) region.[1] The satellite was launched on the 5th May, 2017. Afghanistan,
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka are the users of the multidimensional facilities provided by the satellite.

India’s first smart grid to generate power from renewable energy
sources :
The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology(IIEST) has
successfully created country’s first smart grid project that will generate electricity
or power from renewable sources of energy. Power will be produced from solar,
wind, vegetable waste sources.
7. ISRO Developed "Solar Calculator" Android App
The Space Applications Centre (SAC), ISRO, Ahmedabad at the behest of
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt. of India has developed an android
App for the computation of solar energy potential. It is a very useful tool for
installation of PV solar panels for tapping solar energy.The App provides solar
energy potential (in kWh/m2) at any given location. The required location can be
keyed in or can be obtained through GPS

1. Jepkosgei broke three world records at Prague Half Marathon
on April2,2017
Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya smashed three world records in winning the Prague
Half Marathon. The Kenyan set a new half marathon world record as well as
registering the quickest times for the 10-kilometre and 15-kilometre marks in just
her fifth half marathon. She clocked 64 minutes 52 seconds to complete the half
marathon, 14 seconds better than the previous record.
2. P V Sindhu won India Open badminton title 2017
P.V. Sindhu won the India Open badminton championship in New Delhi. She
defeated reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin in straight sets . She entered
the final after beating Saina Nehwal and Sung ji-Hyun.
3. Indian Batsman Virat Kohli crowned Wisden’s ‘King of the
Willow’
Indian batsman Virat Kohli was named Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World
for 2016. Virat Kohli was also awarded Wisden India Almanack’s Cricketer of the
Year for the second time in its 2017 edition. He scored 1,215 Test runs at average
of 75.93. Virat Kohli was honored with ‘Polly Umrigar award’ at the BCCI Annual
Awards.
4. Indian Olympic Association granted affiliation to Boxing
Federation of India
The Indian Olympic Association granted affiliation to the Boxing Federation of
India (BFI). IOA now recognizes BFI as a fully recognized body by granting
affiliation as per the directives of the International Olympic Committee.
5. India’s first basketball school launched in Mumbai on April
8,2017
National Basketball Association of India announced establishment of India’s first
basketball school in Mumbai. It is a training-based tutorial basketball development
programs around the world for international male and female players ages
6to18.This launch is a part of multiyear agreement between National Basketball
Association and India on Track (IOT). School’s development program is designed
by Elite Basketball Development team.
6. Jehan Daruvala becomes the 1st Indian on pole in the Formula 3
European Championship
Jehan Daruvala became the first Indian racer to take pole position in the F3
European Championships in the qualifying session for Round 2 in Monza, Italy.
However, he finished the race in second place, behind Lando Norris of the UK.
