As the Ball Rolls ericka lab

By: Ericka Parry
Question:
 On which surface will the ball roll the farthest?
Cupboard Liner
Carpet
Carpet Pad
Hypothesis:
 My hypothesis is that the ball will roll farthest on the
carpet pad.
Materials:
• Marble
• Bicycle ramp
• Carpet pad
• Cupboard liner
• Carpet
• Measuring tape
Safety:
Don’t start experiment without permission and
supervision. I didn’t start the experiment until my
mom said I could.
2. Clean up after the lab. I put the surfaces back in the
basement and put the ramp back in the garage.
1.
Procedure:
1. Place carpet at the bottom of the ramp.
2. Set marble in the middle of the ramp and let it roll down.
3. Measure the distance the ball rolled from the bottom of the ramp.
4. Repeat four times.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 with the cupboard liner and the carpet pad.
Variables:
 Independent: The surfaces
 Controlled: The ball that I use, the angle of the ramp.

Conclusion:
 In conclusion my hypothesis stated that the ball will
roll the farthest on the carpet pad. My hypothesis was
correct. According to the data the ball rolled the
farthest on the carpet pad at 71 inches. Possible
problems that might have occurred with this lab
include; I might not have put the marble in the exact
same spot every time. A solution to this is to mark the
spot with a piece of tape. Another problem is the ball
almost rolled off, a solution is to put up guard rails.
