Embedded Systems Engineer
(fixed–term contract until 31st December 2021 depending on funding)
Background
Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) has been recently awarded Interreg IV funding for an
Advanced Manufacturing centre. The core research for the LYIT team is in the field of Additive
Manufacturing.
If you’re an embedded systems or electronic engineer with PCB design and microcontroller
firmware development experience – this may be the role for you. As a key member of a talented
team, you will be responsible for researching, designing and developing embedded systems for
controlling an innovative additive manufacturing machine. The primary responsibility will be
hardware design and development and embedded software development of sensing, monitoring
and actuating.
Person Specification
Ideally you will have a proven track record in designing and writing firmware to implement control
of moving equipment, and in developing, supporting and testing firmware for embedded control
systems. You will specify firmware requirement from standards documents or other high level
requirements for the development of sensing and control of movable equipment within a new 3D
printer. You will define, install and maintain tool chains, documentation, revision control,
simulation and emulation environments. You will write, design, develop and troubleshoot firmware
code in low and high level languages.
Applicants should have an Honours Degree (level 8) or higher in Electronic or Computer
Engineering or in a related discipline. It is essential that the candidate has at least three years postgraduate experience with experience in a commercial/industry focussed design environment.
Experience in a number of the following domains is desirable:






an extensive knowledge of hardware electronic design (Analogue and Digital)
embedded software design (C, Assembler)
AVR Studio Tools, C Compiler, GCC Assembler
SVN (Subversion Numbering)
Experience of ARM Cortex-A/M based microcontrollers
Experience with industry standard electronic hardware circuit design and simulation tools
Key Skills and Competencies
 Demonstrate strong analytical and problem solving skills
 3+ Years experience in software development.
 Fluent in C/C++
 Development experience real-time operating systems
 Real time embedded systems development experience







Understanding of basic engineering principles.
Excellent technical knowledge, analysis and debug skills within field of emphasis
Complex problem solving skills
Good analysis skills and debug skills
Innovative/Creative
Effective communication skills.
Ability to work both individually and collaboratively in a team environment
Key duties and responsibilities:








With other members of design team, creating the specification of software for all new
products
Maintenance of program documentation
Maintenance of records and security of firmware within product design
To engage with industry to develop collaborative projects.
Participate in preparation of appropriate project documentation and design reviews to
ensure accuracy and adherence to technical requirements.
Assume responsibility for completing individual project milestones and maintaining
schedule, once tasks are assigned.
Provide technical and schedule estimates for individual design responsibilities on assigned
project.
To report to the Project Manager and the Principal Investigators as required.
Salary:
€38,787 in Year 1 to €41,984 in Year 5

by the Department of Education and Skills. Short-listing may take place.
