Foundation scholars are entitled to a range of privileges, including a reduction of nonEU fees to EU fee-level (approximately €6,000 per year), a free Commons meal every weekday evening of term and an entitlement to College rooms free of charge during the academic year. Foundation scholarships are held for a term of five years, meaning that students who continue on to postgraduate study retain their 'Schols' benefits. In addition to the tangible benefits held by Scholars, these scholarships are highly prestigious, conferring a lifelong status within the College. Successful candidates, those achieving an overall first class result in the examination for scholarship, are elected by the Board on Trinity Monday, which marks the beginning of the annual Trinity Week when the community celebrates high standards of achievement among students and staff.
