“Your child’s success or lack of success in sports does not
indicate what kind of parent you are….
But having an athlete that is coachable, respectful, a
great teammate, mentally tough, resilient, and tries their
best is a direct reflection of your parenting”
The History of South County Juniors Volleyball Club
South County Juniors volleyball club was born September 2015 on a beach in Narragansett, RI.
There was a small group of friends that would meet in Narragansett to set up a net and play
until the sun set. Seeing these girls bond over the sport they were passionate about, gave way
to the “crazy” idea of starting an indoor club to provide a quality and local indoor club volleyball
experience for these girls. Once the decision was made to move forward, the plan was to invite
10-20 girls and begin the club. As soon as the word began to spread about the new South
County Volleyball Club, more and more people reached out asking to get their daughters
involved. That led to the decision to open up our tryouts and provide this opportunity for many
other South County families. By the end of our first indoor season, we trained over 100 girls
and had 6 competitive teams. Our first season was special for many reasons, including seeing
so many wonderful friendships being formed.
As we began on the beach, it only made sense to continue our beach volleyball training over
the summer months. In March of 2016, we started our beach volleyball training programs.
Beach volleyball is a rapidly growing sport around the world and our club is playing a role in this
growth. We had over 200 kids participate in one of our many summer volleyball programs this
year. We ran a competitive training club, camps and tournaments. Our South County beach
club left a great impression everywhere we went. Players improved their skills and competed
both locally and nationally with amazing success. Beach volleyball is only going to get bigger
and South County Volleyball is prepared to continue to offer these beach volleyball training
opportunities.
As we enter season 2 of our indoor season, we are experiencing a large increase in participants.
Between our boys and girl’s teams, we expect to have over 200 families involved in our indoor
club in 2016-2017. As the club grows, our goal will remain the same. To provide high quality
volleyball instruction while creating an environment for our players to form friendships and to
grow in the sport they are passionate about.

South County Coaches
Our coaching staff is what sets us apart from other clubs. Our coaches include D1
women volleyball coaches, High school coaches, D1 college volleyball athletes,
and more. All coaches are NERVA members with completed background checks.
All coaches are also properly trained and have completed the required Safesport
and Impact courses.
Club Coaching Philosophy
Attempt to give maximum reps at each practice
Only use positive forms of encouragement
Coach effort and not results
Create a competitive environment
Consistently build confidence and self-esteem in all players
Lead Coach- Each lead coach will be responsible to oversee all teams in specific age group.
These coaches will assist head coaches in their practice planning.
Head Coach- Each head coach will be responsible to plan an organized practice and help to
develop skills of all team members. Head coaches are also responsible for communicating team
information to parents. Head coaches also are responsible for determining player roles during
tournaments.
Assistant coach- All assistant coaches are responsible to attend practices and assist the head
coach as needed. Many of our assistant coaches will be experienced players that will be able to
properly demonstrate the skills.
Parent volunteer coach- We will be asking a parent or two from each team to complete
volunteer nerva requirements to be able to fill in for a team’s coach during a tournament for an
emergency situations only.
Club directors- There will be multiple club directors this year responsible for planning our
season and communicating to our families. Club directors will handle any issues your child may
be having this season. Parents are not allowed to approach or contact a coach directly with any
complaints.

Tryout and notification process
Players will be evaluated at tryouts by a collection of evaluators. The goal is to
match up similarly skilled players with consideration for player’s positions. Not
everyone is guaranteed a spot on a team. Teams will have approx. 10 players. As
we did last season, we will not be in a hurry to form teams at the 14U level and
younger. We will have these girls train together until we are ready to form
tournament teams.
Some players will be placed on teams above their nerva age if that will provide
the most competitive environment for that player.

Once season begins
Practices: All practices are schedule for evenings Thursday-Sunday.
Every
team will most likely practice Sunday evenings. Players should make an effort to
attend all practices. Players should contact their coach when they need to miss a
practice.
Tournaments:
It is important to remember that this is a training club, the
important reps happen at practice where all the kids are given the same
opportunity. Our club does not require coaches to provide equal playing at
tournaments. As we get closer to tournament season, you will be meeting with
your child’s coaches one on one to discuss their playing time philosophy for their
team.
Communication: We understand the Importance of communication and
are committed to keeping our families informed on any changes to our schedule
or upcoming events. Each team will have their own “remind app – chat group”
that head coaches will use to communicate with their team families. We also use
the homepage of the website, Facebook, and twitter to update club events.
Uniforms/gear:
Girls will need to purchase their own uniform this year.
Players will be given the option to use the same uniform as last year if applicable.
We will have a uniform sizing night early in our season. We will also have an
online store for families to purchase other South County gear (optional).

I will support my child, his/her team and coach in a positive manner.
