Implications from previous learning:
This is the first time meeting the children. Taking into
consideration that they are in Year 3, we expect them to have
experience with throwing, catching and various movements.
Today’s lesson we will be assessing where the children are at
in these areas.
Strategies for pupils with specific learning difficulties and
Resources
- 7/8 bibs
disabilities/challenge for more able
- 4/5 Hula hoops
- For any EAL students, one part instructions will be given
- Set of cones
and spoken on child level. Use of gestures, body language
- 2 rugby balls/ round balls
and visual aids will be used to support them.
- Stop watch
- For those who struggle with control while handling the ball,
- 15 pencils
they will start with a big round ball before moving on to the
- 15 worksheets
rugby ball.
- Whistle
- The try line activity will be changed in order to provide the
children with a challenge. There will be larger spaces
between the children.
*Today’s lesson will allow us to differentiate between the children
for future lessons
Teaching Standards Related Professional Development Focus
- T.S.1 – Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
- T.S.3 – Demonstrate a good subject and curriculum knowledge
- T.S.7 – Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
Role of other adults
- Both members of staff will be walking around all groups, providing assistance and challenge when needed. They will be
assessing the children’s skills.
- During discussion time, all staff will be sat/stood with children to ensure behaviour management is maintained.
Learning Objectives
- To explore the skills needed for tag
rugby.
- To co-operate with a group to complete
a task.
- To demonstrate catching, throwing,
dodging and tagging skills.
- To record and assess their own
learning.
Time
11.00am
11.05am
Assessment Criteria
I will be assessing:
- The children’s ability to work
within a group.
- The children’s ability to dodge
their opponent while maintaining
balance.
- The children’s ability to observe

learnt during physical activity.
Success Criteria
The children will need to:
- Follow the instructions.
- Write down their findings.
- Work with others to score a try
- Communicate with their peers
- Use visual awareness of others
and resources
- Display correct hand positions on
the ball
-
Lesson outline:
Warm up –
- Introduce Tag Rugby, explain that we need a range of locomotor and nonmanipulative skills.
- Introduce the idea of a warm up
- Question their ideas of why?
- Place hands on heart, beating slow? Place hands on head, feeling cold?
- Introduce Pirate ship warm up
- Place hands on heart, beating fast? Place hands on head, feeling hot?
Pirate ship –
- Create a large square and ask the children to walk around it.
- Shout out a range of commands:
- Scrub the Decks–Children fall to their knees and pretend to scrub the floor.
- Climb the Rails–Children pretend to climb rails
- Captains Cook–Children pretend to stir the pot
- Captains Coming–Children salute and say “Aye Aye Captain”
- Walk the Plank-Children have to walk in a perfect straight line one foot exactly in
front of the other with arms outstretched to the sides
- Peg Leg Jim–children hop on one leg
Dodging and Tagging –
- Introduce these two skills
- Discuss the rule of taking the tag and placing it on the ground
- Get them to demonstrate a dodge
- Introduce Shark Attack
Opportunities for Assessment
for Learning
Assessment for learning:
- Their previous
knowledge of tag rugby
and the skills needed
- Their ideas of a warm
up and why we need
one
- Assess their levels of
movement, control and
balance
- Assess the children’s
visual awareness of
other people and also
equipment
- Their ability to maintain
balance while shifting
their weight quickly
- Assess their listening
and attention during
discussions and
explanations
- Their ability to work and
- Ask them to give an example where the dodged or tagged.
Shark Attack –
- Place hula hoops around the square, these are islands for swimmers
- Choose one Shark, this child will walk around the square using his hand as a fin
above his head
- The other children will be swimmers, they will be pretending to swim while
walking around the square. They will have a bib tucked into their shorts (or a
tag).
- When you shout Shark Attack, the shark will chase the swimmers pulling their
tags out. If your tag is pulled out you become a shark.
- The swimmers must get to the islands to be safe.
- (If enough space maybe split in half and have two games going)
11.12am Throwing and catching –
- Introduce the backwards rule
- Demonstrate positioning on the ball
- Highlight that you can not move with the ball
- Question how do we score a point?
- Introduce Try line game
- Ask them to demonstrate the hand position on the ball
Try Line –
- Split them into two teams
- Line them up
- They must pass the ball backwards down the line
- The last one in the line must run forward with the ball again
- The first team to place the ball on the finish line and score a try will win
- To increase challenge the space between the children will become larger and the
length of the square will become longer. This will encourage them to throw the
ball backwards.
11.19am Plenary –
- Highlight all skills and rules that were introduced
- Ask them to feedback to you
- Encourage them to fill out the question assessment sheets.
Summary of pupil learning
Implications for future planning
-
communicate within a
team
Assess their recall
Use of worksheets to
display their
understanding and
knowledge of the
lesson.
