Billet Family Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is a billet family? A billet family (host family) is a player’s home-away-from-home during the season. 2. Are billet families paid? Each month, billet families receive a $300 stipend per player to help with the expenses that come with housing a high-performing athlete. Billet families are asked to provide three meals per day and additional snacks for each player. While on the road, the Wildcats provide meals for each player. Billet families are also given two complimentary season tickets for each season they billet. 3. Is there a “typical” billet family? There is no “typical” billet family. Billets may be two-adult households with or without children, single-parent households, and occasionally an “empty-nester.” The common theme is a desire by the family to make a difference in a young person’s life. Oftentimes players will make a difference in the lives of the billet family as well, taking on a role as a surrogate big brother or mentor. 4. Can a family host more than one player? Yes. The only requirement is that each player has adequate space/living arrangements. Each player is expected to have his own bed, closet or dresser, and acceptable access to a restroom. Players are responsible for their own transportation. 5. How long does a player stay? Players arrive in late August. Players in school will usually stay with the billet family until school ends in early June. Players who are not in school will usually leave within a few days after the season ends in April or May. 6. Who pays if a player is injured or needs medical attention during his stay? Billet parents are never responsible for medical payments. Players must have medical insurance from their own families. 7. Will players join our family for personal events? You are welcome to invite players to join you for family celebrations or activities; however, it is not mandatory for you to do so. Schedule permitting, players will be given off for larger holidays to return home. 8. Will my player attend school or have a job? Players are not required to have jobs, but will have responsibilities around the rink and in the community to keep idle time to a minimum. High school students will be required to continue their education throughout the school year. Non-high school players are encouraged to take online post-secondary education. 9. Will I have to pass a background check? Yes, the Wichita Falls Wildcats require background screenings for billet families. Every adult over the age of 17 will be required to pass the background check.
