Motivation
In essence, motivation is the art of getting people to do
things because they want to, or because they see some
benefit.
At its most crude, motivation in the workplace is
linked to pay.
It has subsequently been proved that pay is not the only
motivator and in certain circumstances does not act as a
motivator at all
Intrinsically – ENJOYMENT OF THE WORK ITSELF
Extrinsically – MONEY IS THE MAIN MOTIVATOR
ALSO MOTIVATION IS NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL

Theory One
•Maslow’s Hierarchy of
Needs

watch?v=Iucf76E-R2s
Theory Two
•McGregor’s Theory X and
Theory Y
•Explain the key elements of
McGregor’s theory
McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y
• Douglas McGregor developed 2 theories of human behaviour at work. He
identified 2 groups of workers who were at the different ends of the
spectrum.
• Study the following list and put them into 2 categories with similar
characteristics
Workers
• Are keen
Are lazy
• Need to be pushed
• Will work on their own
• Avoid responsibility
• Show initiative
• Show no initiative
• Respond to threats
• Respond to rewards
• Seek responsibility
….
Theory Three:

motivator factors

Hygiene or Motivation Needs
• What did Herzberg mean by hygiene factors?
• What did Herzberg mean by motivation factors?
Study the following list which are hygiene and which are
motivator factors
Pay
The work itself
Company Policy & Administration
Supervision
Working conditions
Recognition
Responsibility
Job Security
Relationship with fellow workers
Sense of achievement
Personal Growth – opportunities for self development
F W Herzberg “Work and the Nature of Man 1996” 2 Factor Theory
SET 1 Hygiene /Maintenance Factor
1.
Company Policy & Administration
2.
Supervision
3.
Working conditions
4.
Job Security
5.
Relationship with fellow workers
6.
Pay?
MANAGERS SPENT TOO MUCH TIME ON THESE FACTORS AND THEY DID
NOT POSITIVELY MOTIVATE PEOPLE.
SET 2 Motivation Factors (Herzberg believed these really motivated people)
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Sense of achievement
The work itself
Recognition
Responsibility
Personal Growth – opportunities for self development
IF MOTIVATORS ARE IN PLACE, THEN WORKERS WILL USE THEIR INITIATIVE, BE
MORE POSITIVE & TAKE MORE CARE……AND BE
TIME ON THESE FACTORS. THEY DID NOT POSITIVELY MOTIVATE PEOPLE.
F W Herzberg “Work and the Nature of Man 1996” 2 Factor Theory
•
A fundamental finding of Herzberg’s work was that the design of
jobs has the biggest impact on the levels of motivation.
•
Jobs should be designed to allow employees to achieve personal
targets and goals, and there should be opportunities to offer
praise and recognition.
•
Herzberg criticised for classifying pay as a hygiene factor and
arguing that pay could not motivate staff.
• Boosting motivators and tackling
hygiene factors should be done at
the same time by management.
