INNERTUBE WATER POLO LEAGUE RULES

ALL CSU IM SPORTS PARTICIPANTS AND SPECTATORS ARE EXPECTED
TO ADHERE TO THE IM SPORTS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
I.
ELIGIBILITY – WHO CAN PLAY?
a. FULL-TIME CSU STUDENTS (6 or more credits and have paid the Rec Activity Fee as part of their
semester tuition)
b. PART-TIME CSU STUDENTS who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the
dates they play
c. FACULTY/STAFF who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the dates they
play
d. SPOUSES who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the dates they play
e. SPORT CLUB ATHLETES – A maximum of two current club athletes may appear on any IM
Competitive division roster in the same/like sport (“current” is defined as one who appears on
club team’s roster during that academic year). Sport Club athletes cannot play in Recreational
divisions.
f. FORMER VARSITY team members whose names do not appear on the current academic year’s
NCAA/NAIA varsity team roster in the same/like sport can participate in the same/like sport in
either the Recreational or Competitive division. A maximum of one former collegiate varsity
player can appear on a Recreational team’s roster in the same/like sport.
g. CURRENT VARSITY, semi-professional (receiving monetary pay for playing), professional, and
Olympic athletes: Any participant whose name currently appears on a team roster in the
current academic year for any of these types of teams or organizations is ineligible to
participate in the same/like sport. This includes “red” and “grey” shirts.
II.
LEAGUE RULES:
a. Teams will play a 4-week regular season – 1 game each week – and then teams finishing in the
top half of each league (with at least a 2.0 sportsmanship rating average) will advance to the
single-elimination playoffs.
b. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST SHOW THEIR CSU PHOTO ID IN ORDER TO PLAY EVERY GAME. NO
CSU PHOTO ID = NO PLAY. NO EXCEPTIONS.
c. FORFEITS: Game time listed on the schedule is forfeit time, and teams must be checked in and
ready to play at their scheduled game time. If, at game time, one team doesn’t have the
minimum number of players needed to start the game checked in and ready to play, the
captain of the team that is ready to play has the following options.
i. Take the win by forfeit, OR
ii. Allow 5 extra minutes for the opposing team to field a minimum required line-up and
then start the game. NOTE: If this option is chosen, the result of the contest will stand.
NOTE: If a team forfeits two games, they are removed from the rest of the league.
Please do your best to field an eligible team for each game.
III.
GAME RULES:
a. LINE UP & ROSTER
i. Maximum of 12 players allowed on a team roster.
ii. The game is played 6-on-6. 5 players in the field, with the difference being no greater
than 1 between genders, and the goalie must even the number of genders in the pool.
If a team plays with an odd number of players, the goalie may be gender neutral.
iii. A minimum of 3 players is required to start a game (at least 1 person of each gender
needed)
b. GAME TIME
i. Game will consist of two 20 minute running halves.
ii. Before the final 2-minutes of the game, the clock will only stop for official and team
timeouts.
iii. The clock will stop in the last two minutes for all violations, personal fouls, foul shots,
and balls out of play.
iv. TIMEOUTS
1. Teams are allowed four 30-second timeouts per game.
2. During a timeout, players may not move their position in the pool.
v. OVERTIME PROCEDURES
1. If the game is tied at the end of regulation, there will be a shootout, with each
team having 3 shooters.
2. Shots will be taken at the same goal, with teams alternating shooters based off
of a coin toss to start overtime.
3. Goalies MAY NOT be a shooter in the overtime session.
4. Whichever team has more scored goals in the shootout will be declared the
winner.
5. If at the end of the 3 shooters, teams are still tied, teams will send 1 shooter at a
time, and the winner will be based off of whoever is leading at the end of each
successive round.
vi. GAME PLAY
1. Play will start with both teams on their respective ends of the pool, touching the
wall with their hand(s).
2. Official will toss ball into center of pool, while blowing whistle to signal the start of
the game (if players leave wall prior to start of play, an indirect free throw will be
given from location of ball to offended team).
3. Goals
a. A goal scored by a female player is worth:
i. 2-points in front of the 10-meter line.
ii. 3-points behind the 10-meter line.
b. A goal scored by a male player is worth:
i. 1-point in front of the 10-meter line.
ii. 2-points behind the 10-meter line.
c. Following a goal, the ball will be put back into play by a goalie throw.
4. Players must be seated, with legs over the side of the innertube.
5. If teams maintain dual possession of the ball at any time, possession will be
determined through an alternating process based off the initial loose ball.
The team not gaining initial possession of the ball will be awarded the first
held ball, and alternate between teams from there.
c. MERCY RULE
i. The mercy rule will be in effect at, and anytime inside of, the last two minutes of the game.
ii. A mercy will be called if a team is ahead by 15 goals or more.
IV.
EQUIPMENT
a. JEWELRY
i. Jewelry may be worn by players seeing that it does not hang far from the body (i.e.
necklace, hoop earrings, etc.)
ii. If a player participates with illegal jewelry, a violation will be called on their team, and the
other team will be awarded the ball.
b. ATTIRE
i. All players must wear appropriate bathing suits that cover areas that are necessary to be
covered.
ii. No head wear is permitted while in the pool.
iii. No foot wear is permitted while in the pool.
iv. No swimming aids that provide an advantage to a player may be worn at any time.
v. Swim assist wear may be worn, seeing that is does not give an advantage to any player.
c. GAME BALL – CSU IM Sports will provide a game ball for every contest.
V.
VIOLATIONS AND PERSONAL FOULS
a. For all violations, a change of possession, or indirect free throw, is awarded to offended team.
b. For all personal fouls, a penalty shot is awarded from the 10 meter cone line (penalty shots must
be taken by the participant the foul was committed against).
c. VIOLATIONS – all violation indirect throws will be taken from the spot of the infraction.
i. Holding onto the pool wall while in possession of the ball.
ii. Holding the ball under water and any point in time.
iii. Holding possession for 5 seconds while a player is closely guarded (defensive player is at
least six feet away).
iv. Playing the ball while out of innertube (goalie excluded).
v. Striking the ball with a clenched fist (goalie excluded).
vi. Falling out of innertube while in possession of the ball (either on our accord or from being
dumped), or falling from innertube immediately following shot.
vii. Defender falling from innertube during or after a dump.
1. If the defender comes out of their innertube during a dump on an offenders shot
and the shot goes in, the violation will be ignored, and the goal will be counted.
viii. Any player, other than the goalie, in the crease.
ix. Goalie throwing the ball, in the air, more than half the length of the pool.
1. Indirect free throw will occur at the point it crossed the half pool line.
x. Hooking feet under an opponent’s innertube.
xi. Splashing water, purposefully, at an opponent.
xii. Kicking of the ball in mid flight.
xiii. Placing the ball in the water to avoid a 5 second count while closely guarded.
xiv. Intentionally moving an opponent’s empty innertube.
xv. Purposefully kicking an opponent’s tube.
xvi. Goalie dumping any opponent.
1. The indirect throw occurs perpendicular to the infraction on the 10 meter line.
d. PERSONAL FOULS – all personal fouls result in a penalty shot taken from the 10 meter line. All
other players (excluding goalie) must remain outside of 10 meter zone, until the shot has been
taken.
i. Intentional bodily contact with an opponent.
ii. Batting the ball while in possession by an opponent.
iii. Physical contact with an opponent’s innertube when they are not in possession of the ball.
