Youth Train
CTC Wexford
Community training is a process whereby those who are without formal qualifications,
and excluded from society, are enabled to gain self-confidence and skills to access
employment and contribute to their community. There are 35 Community Training Centres
or CTCs around the country working with young people aged 16-21 years and prioritising
young people without qualifications. Youth Train CTC is funded through the Waterford
Wexford Education and Training Board. Our work is guided by national SOLAS FET policy and
managed strategically by a Board of Management comprising stakeholders involved with
young people and progression.
The role of an instructor in a CTC is to provide quality assured training that responds to
the learner’s individual needs and issues. The
instructor is a key player in providing the skills and
vision to work independently and as part of the
staff team to empower each learner to achieve
their goals. The work is challenging and can be very
rewarding. Each learner’s uniqueness is recognised
through individual recruitment and Individual
Learning Plans. Managing a group of 10-12
learners requires organisation, patience, energy,
commitment and creativity.
History of Youth Train
Youth Train was established in 1999 and initially based in Wexford Town. In 2013 we moved
to new premises in Whitemill Industrial Estate that have offered us the chance to develop
our programmes and greater opportunities for the learners who train with us.
Programmes
Our current programmes include a QQI Level 3 Award in Employability Skills and a QQI4
Major award in Employment Skills. We have a keen focus on preparation for employment
and the two mentioned programmes allow a learner to develop employment skills and a
strong platform for accessing work. The identification and development of Communications
skills are mandatory components for achieving all major QQI awards.
How we work and progress
Each learner has their individual story, levels and aspirations. There are up to 40 young
people engaged with Youth Train at any one time. Youth Train aims to provide the safe and
welcoming space within which each young person can be supported and challenged to
identify and pursue plans for their own development. This instructor will work with a
dedicated staff team to nurture strong communication skills in each learner and support
them to achieve a minor award in communications.
