Experienced owner

New Maytag-equipped coin store
in Mason City built from ground up!

R
on Drewelow got his start in the coin laundry business
four years ago when he purchased an older store on the
east side of Mason City, a diversified community of 30,000
in north-central Iowa. His first action was to replace small,
inefficient front-load washers with new energy-efficient,
larger capacity Maytag equipment. He also spruced up the
store’s interior, hired an attendant and banned smoking
inside the store.
“For a business that was barely making it, I was amazed
with how these changes quickly turned the store around,
with customers soon flocking to the store and commenting on what a great place it was to do their laundry,” said
Drewelow.
With this success well established, Drewelow began to
search for a second location. “I realized that Mason City
was significantly underserved when it came to quality coin
laundries for the size of the market,” he explained. “I spent
a lot of time and carefully researched properties and finally
chose what I thought was the perfect site.”
The new 3,800-sq. ft. Leisure Wash Maytag-equipped
store is located along busy Highway 18 on the west edge
of Mason City. The area has heavy retail nearby, with a

is that the store is located directly across from the North

Drewelow worked with Todd
Stoltz and the team at BDS Laundry Systems of St. Paul, Minnesota,
the Maytag Commercial Laundry
distributor serving the area, on
designing and equipping the store.
BDS also provided assistance with
a demographic survey of the area,
floor plan layout and consultation.
“The expertise that BDS brings to
the table was really valuable in
getting my new store off the
ground,” he pointed out.
The store opened in May 2007,
and business has been building
steadily ever since. “We’re drawing a lot of traffic from surrounding towns, as well as travelers
off of nearby Interstate 35,” said
Drewelow. “When customers come

more Maytag multi-load washers can be added
as the business grows. “Once customers are
educated on the benefits of using the front-load
equipment, they really appreciate the time and
cost savings of being able to wash and dry all of
their laundry in fewer loads,” said Drewelow.
The drop-off service has been growing
steadily since the store’s opening, averaging
about 25 orders per day. The store also offers
drycleaning drop-off and pick-up through an
agreement with a local company.
Saturday and Sunday are the store’s busiest
days, with about 70 percent of the normal business done on the weekends. “There are times
when every washer and dryer is in operation,
with people waiting in line,” he owner said.
Targeted radio commercials and newspaper
advertising were used during the store’s first
two weeks of operation. On the store’s

Drewelow describes his
customers’ reaction on their
first visit to the store. “They
are just overwhelmed by the
mega-load Maytag equipment
and the cleanliness of the
store. Our satisfied customers
are our best advertising, and
it’s paying big dividends week
after week.”
— Ron Drewelow
In addition to the coin laundry equipment, the
store features 10 tanning beds, with room to
add seven more as the business grows.

less busy days — Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Thursdays — Drewelow takes advantage of the
advanced ComputerTrac® controls to automatically
vend wash prices on the front-load high-efficiency
washers at a 50-cent discount. Drewelow also has
distributed flyers at area tourist locations to boost
business, and plans to install a pole sign in front of
the business.
Customers are greeted by a large attendant sta-
tion at the front of the store, where the change machine and soap vending machine are located. Store
attendants also manage the walk-in traffic of the
adjacent tanning operation. A closed-circuit surveillance system keeps a watchful eye on the operation.
The store is designed with ample room for ex-
pansion of the laundry and tanning facilities. There
is also a 1,400-sq. ft. area at the back of the store
that features a separate entrance where Drewelow
plans to add a snack bar, coffee and ice cream business in the coming months. The lot is large enough
at the back of the store where self-storage rental
units can be added in the future.

It’s a lonely job being the Maytag Repairman, but Clay
Jackson of Richmond, Virginia, is giving it a try. As the new
face of Maytag dependability, Jackson will play a major role
in revitalizing the historic 100-plus year-old Maytag brand
and will help bring its unequaled tradition of quality and
dependability to life.
More than 1,500 people participated in a multi-city
audition process including professional actors, construction
workers, salesmen and stockbrokers. The two-month search
included union casting calls, open auditions and mail-in
submissions that were reviewed and evaluated by Maytag/
Whirlpool representatives.
Jackson is the fourth person to portray the brand icon
during its 40-year existence. The Repairman sports a new
uniform, a new attitude and is an evolution of the dependable character that was created in 1967.
“The new Maytag Repairman will help revitalize the
Maytag brand and its heritage by keeping one foot in our
past while putting the other in our future,” said Jeff Davidoff,
vice president of brand marketing and communications for
Maytag. “Clay is perfect for our new take on the role. He’s
energetic, young-at-heart and outgoing while still being
dependable and reliable.”
Watch for the new Maytag Repairman in advertising and
at select industry events.
