Van Cleef & Arpels
Van Cleef & Arpels is a brand from French; the main product in this brand is
jewelry, watch, and perfume. Alfred Van Cleef and his uncle Salomon Arpels founded
Van Cleef & Arpels in 1896. They opened their first boutique in 1906 at 22 places
Vendôme, Paris.
It is June 15, 1895 Esther Arpels, Alfred Van Cleef wife, in 1896 Alfred
founded a company "society Alfred Van Cleef and Arpels Solomon" with his
stepfather, Salomon Arpels, traveling salesman and dealer in jewelry at the end of
his life (d. 1903), married Alfred Van Cleef, whose family were sheet merchants
living in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. In 1903, Alfred Van Cleef and his brothers
in law Salomon Pierre and Jules Arpels had already established a company with the
aim of “founding and running a jewellery business”.
In 1906, they registered the “Van Cleef & Arpels” trademark and opened a
boutique at 22 places Vendôme. Esther’s brothers, Salomon, Jules and Louis Arpels,
joined them soon. Alfred Van Cleef died in 1938, leaving his daughter, Renée Rachel
Puissant, behind him. From 1909 to 1939, Van Cleef & Arpels prospered and opened
boutiques in holiday resorts such as Deauville, Le Touquet, Nice and Monte-Carlo.
Progressively, the second generation joined the business. In 1939, Julius and
Claude Arpels emigrate to the United States soon joined not Louis Arpels, Renee
Rachel Puissant-Van Cleef takes refuge in Vichy after the separation of the two in
France by the Germans, Esther Van Cleef wife of founder Alfred Van Cleef will in
Cannes as well as Jacques Arpels will remain until May 1944 in Cannes before
fleeing to Switzerland in 1944 and opened their first boutique in New York, on 5th
Avenue.
Renée Puissant died at Vichy on 12/12/1942, she was the sole heir of Alfred
Van Cleef Later, Van Cleef & Arpels became the first French jewellers to open
boutiques in Japan and China. Over the years, a descendant of the Arpels family
always managed the firm, until the Compagnie Financière Richemont S.A. acquired it
in 1999.
