LIVE MEANS – A THROWN BALL THAT STRIKES, OR IS CAUGHT BY, AN OPPOSING PLAYER WITHOUT/BEFORE CONTACTING THE GROUND, ANOTHER PLAYER OR BALL. BEGINNING THE GAME: a) Prior to the beginning of the game, 6 balls are placed evenly along the centre line. Teams will start each game with exactly 6 players on the floor. If a team cannot start the game with 6 players then they will play the entire game a person down. There is a minimum of 4 players required to start any game. All active players will start each game with one hand touching the wall. All non-active players must remain seated and on the bench. b) The game begins with the sound of the referees whistle. c) At the sound of the first whistle, players will run for the balls. The balls are not in play until one of the following happens: 1) The player with possession of the ball completely crosses the “Safe Line” with both feet. 2) The player with first possession of the ball legally passes the ball to a teammate who is completely passed the “Safe Line” with both feet 3) Once the ball has been held by a player behind the “Safe Line” it is in play and can be thrown from anywhere. If the ball is thrown before the ball crosses the “Safe Line” then the ball is dead. 4) The “Safe Line” is usually 4 feet back from the centre line. GAME RULES – GAMEPLAY 1) Players cannot touch the centre line. Players will be called out if they touch or cross the centre line. 2) To eliminate an opponent with the ball, a player must throw the ball and hit an opposing player anywhere below the head. Headshots will NOT result in a player being called out: however, unnecessary force used to get an out will result in the player throwing the ball being called out. (For example, a player slips near the centre line…the player can certainly be thrown out but there is no for excessive force if the thrower is standing nearby). 3 3) When a player is called out they must drop any balls held and go straight to the bench to sit out. 4) Any balls thrown by a player already being called out will be considered a dead ball. No one can be called out by that ball until it’s touched another player. 5) All intentional interferences will result in a player being called out at the referee’s discretion. Examples of interferences include; a) A player intentionally blocking a ball or passing/bumping a ball to a teammate while on his/her way to the bench. b) Players on the bench intentionally stopping balls, passing, bumping balls to their teammates, or keeping balls from crossing the line. c) If balls are unavoidable, players should let balls bounce off them as naturally as possible. 6) If a player is struck with a ball anywhere below the head and the ball is caught by the struck player or by a teammate before the ball hits the ground – the thrower is called out and the person hit with the ball is safe. 7) If a player catches an opponent’s throw, the player who threw the ball will be out, and a team member on the catcher’s side will be allowed back into the game. If there are already six players still on the floor, the thrower will still be out, but no new player will be allowed back in. 8) Until the game has become a one-on-one situation, a player can only be called out by a ball that is thrown, and hits a player, directly; once a ball hits the ground it is considered a dead ball. It is the referee’s discretion as to a dead ball during a close call; their decision will be final. 9) However, once the game has become a one-on-one situation all balls are in play all the time! If a player walks into a ball on the ground, whether it is stopped, rolling, or bouncing, the player will be called out. 10) Players re-entering the game are considered active as soon as the teammate catches the ball allowing them in. Players must re-enter play as soon as the teammate catches the ball. 11) A player may block an oncoming ball with another ball. If a thrown ball is deflected upward and caught by a teammate, the thrower will be called out. If a player deflects a ball with another but drops the ball used to deflect, that player will be called out. 12) Players must keep the game in PLAY. If at anytime one team has possession of the balls that team has 5 seconds to throw all the balls. Referee must count down time out loud. Any players at the end of the count with the ball still are called out for delay of games. 13) Any player that crosses the centre line will be called out. 14) Balls are always thrown and not kicked. Any intentionally kicked ball will result in the player being called out. 4 15) A legal throw involves the player having full control of the ball before throwing. A ball swatted from the air/ground will not count as a throw, and the action will be treated as a fumbled ball. 16) Honesty is essential in dodge ball. If a player is hit, it is the player’s responsibility to call themselves out, whether the referee sees it or not. The referee has the final say in any hit. 17) Unsportsmanlike conduct will result in a removal from the game, as judged by the referees. 18) If the last player on each team is eliminated in the same play, the team with the player struck last will win the game. In the event that the referee can not make the call on any play then the referee can make the decision to have the game continue with no one being called out. 19) REFEREES ALWAYS HAVE THE FINAL SAY. ROLE OF THE PLAYERS: All players participating in co-ed leagues are expected to play with respect for everyone. Please come with a “fun first” attitude. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
