Weekly Structure
 Reading Assignment – first exposure to concepts
 Weekly Reading Quiz – testing for understanding
 Weekly Class Meeting – team work, consolidate
understanding
 Weekly Online Meeting – focus on hands-on concepts
 Weekly Hands-on assignments – develop skills
This is where you will spend a lot of your time. You cannot learn
to ride a bicycle by studying a book. You need to do it. You
need to fall to know what not to do and what to do.

Did I Miss Anything?
 Nothing. When we realized you weren't here
we sat with our hands folded on our desks
in silence, for the full two hours
 Everything. I gave an exam worth
40 per cent of the grade for this term
and assigned some reading due today
on which I'm about to hand out a quiz
worth 50 per cent

 What is my point?
You need to be here for every class, you need to be on time and
you need to do your work, and you need to follow the class
policies as stated in the syllabus

Who is Responsible?
 Take for instance the case of the homeowners in Pennsylvania
who lost a $500,000 lawsuit to someone who broke into their
home. When the robber left their house he tried to escape through
the garage. The automatic door opener was not working, however,
and since the door to the house had locked when the robber shut
it, he was stuck in the garage. He spent eight days living on a can
of soda and dry dog food. He was awarded that $500,000 for his
“undue mental anguish.”
 The robber broke the law and violated the homeowners’ property
rights and still thought he had the right to compensation for
anguish brought on by his own illegal behavior.
 … a jury awarded a woman $780,000 after she broke her ankle
when she tripped over a toddler running inside a furniture store.
The store had to pay for her pain even though the running child
was her own.

You are in Charge
 When you miss class it is your choice and your
responsibility.
 When you do not turn in your assignments, there was a
choice along the line.
 I hope you choose self-responsibility.
